Bottom line is with or without the logbook you can still get done. There is a way though. Apply for the logbook in a random name at a random address... preferably somewhere nowhere near you (abandoned house etc), when log book arrives send it off again in YOUR name/address as the new owner and write yourself out a receipt from the previous mysterious owner than you made up. At this point there is very little they can do as you can claim to have bought it innocently after seeing it advertised. If you apply for the log book in your name, like many others have said, the rozzers will come knocking if reported stolen. Some people are very lucky and get away with it but its honestly not worth a criminal record otherwise. Getting nicked is not fun. I'm sure this will just get you into even more trouble, for no extra protection... I've seen stories of peeps who've bought ringed expensive modern cars, and once the police find out that the car is stolen, then they lose it, and the 6 grand or whatever they paid for it

Not that I would advise this, as it's daft, I can't but think that plan would fall at the first hurdle. Unless you plan to break into said fictitious/abandoned house to retrieve the V5, considering that's where the DVLA would send it. Chris

Just go an buy one, its seriously not worth the hassle for an old polo is it? considering how much i absolutely love polos.... your right.... its a w plate which makes it one of the last. with the ugly crossover front end, a pretty much mk2 like interior.... for the hassle you may as well buy one... unless your talking GT in which case get legal about it as they are rarer than a rare thing....

Hi chris cheers I read that yesterday and I was still confused lol tofufi its a 65 date of first reg 07 12 1965 That would most likely make it a 66 model. Volkswagen model years ran from somewhere in the middle of the previous year

2 different cases in this thread, but both I think just require the same thing IMO- Be fair! If you can take ownership of a car legally, and what would feel to be fair - i.e. if the person on the other end of the situation would have to admit "fair enough", then do it BUT If your way of obtaining it feels a little bit like you were being unfair for the sake of karma, walk away.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I once aquired an abandond car by going to the police, they put a notice on the windscreen and said if nobody claimed it in 60 days i could take it away.

Hi chris cheers I read that yesterday and I was still confused lol tofufi its a 65 date of first reg 07 12 1965 It's a '66 model. My bug was built 3rd Sept '65 and is a '66 model. Try ordering front suspension parts for a '65 (linkpin) and it won't fit that '66 (balljoint front suspension) VW model years ran from August to August. The steel wheels, decklid and other parts on it are '66 only. Let me know if you want to sell the front seats, if there are any

If you apply for the log book in your name, like many others have said, the rozzers will come knocking if reported stolen. Some people are very lucky and get away with it but its honestly not worth a criminal record otherwise. Getting nicked is not fun. They'll come knocking on the door of the current registered keeper first, i.e. you. It's not going to take the police's finest investigative minds to work out what's going on when they go to the (abandoned) address of the (fictional) guy you "bought" it off, is it? I sold a seemingly abandoned motorbike that didn't belong to me (which was naughty of me) and the former keeper received a fine of £55 from DVLA for not informing them of the change of keeper. Would have been £35 if he/I paid it within two weeks, and would have been £1000 if he/I didn't pay it within 4 weeks. I tracked him down, as he was a friend of a friend, and explained the situation with much wringing of hands and apologising; he was totally unbothered as it happened and I gave him the 55 quid to pay the fine. Which was £5 more than I got for the bike But the point is, had I not then the DVLA could have taken him to court to collect the £1000. Seeing as I tracked him down by looking through my friend's friends on Facebook they wouldn't have struggled to find him. If I got taken to court for £1000 for something I didn't do then I'd be well curse word off, and I would definitely report the bike stolen, regardless of whether I was bothered by its loss or not.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I Agree that you should take loads of pics of the car before starting work on it,and get a registration document. I Think it would also be a good idea to get the car valued BEFORE you start work, sounds like in all likelyhood the guy is gone and is not going to return, allways best to cover your though mate.
