Seeing as though progress on my coupe has been slow I fancied something a bit retro to roll in this summer. I spotted this on Volkszone with an eBay link and had a last minute bid to secure it. It was located in Cornwall but I didnt mind as it would be a cool day out for me and my son to collect it. We left Worthing on the train at 9.22 and four trains later we arrived in Falmouth at 16.15. Vendors partner was waiting at the station and after doing the paperwork we were on our way home. Initially I was less than impressed with the overall condition but hey what do you expect for a 29 year old car so I fueled it up, checked the oil and hit the road. The main things to come to light were a bad exhaust blow and intermitant fuel guage but it ran well and we cruised home between 60-70mph. No break downs and just a couple of breaks we covered the 265 miles home in 6 hours. So on Sunday we gave a it a good wash and looked it over properly. Its pretty solid but has a few areas needing attention. The exhaust centre box will need replacing and I have secured what I hope is the correct one on eBay. Had a play with some wheels I have and it looks like the Lega ones will be fitted once I find some sleeve bolts. Obligatory stick hitting will happen either by mr grinder or replacement springs. Still got a lot of enjoyable fettling to do then its probably gonna get the oap grandadstyles look with trilby and walking stick on rear shelf. Might even go for a period roof rack but will resist the urge to load it full of retro tat! So if anyone has any bits that you think I might need drop us a pm. In fact I could do with a front bumper and spoiler if you see one about as these are pretty tatty.

I saw this on ebay too (but have too many cars and no money). Nice cars these early Passats. Great to see it ended up on here and we can watch it's progress. Tasteful period mods 'float my boat' on cars like this.

Exhaust blow means it will need a new centre section which I sourced from eBay but has still not arrived. Got a beaded seat cover and another on the way but I am a little unsure of the look at the moment. Managed to find some correct sleeve bolts for my LEGA alloys. Apparently quite rare now and would normally used on Cobra Supaslots. Fitted one of the rears. Then tried to fit one on the front but FAILED! The LEGA wheels do not have much relief on the inside and foul the caliper. Looks like I need a 15mm spacer but the bolts would need to be longer and having just spent ÂŁ36 on these thats not an option. Could purchase some bolt on adaptors but they are fairly expensive. So current thinking is 10mm universal adaptors then a tickle on the caliper with my angle grinder or just sell them and cut my losses. Currently looking for a reasonably priced retro roof rack like the Desmo or Harry Moss so if you have one let me know. To be continued........

wheels are nice, it looks like you already have the Mk.II calipers fitted.... and i hate to say it, i think i have a roofrack in the workshop ;D have to check that later.... you'll be getting the new bumper (if you like) as it's minus the chrome strips....

Could an engineering firm turn the inside of the wheels on a lathe to create a bit more clearance? Failing that perhaps some original VW alloys?

I picked up some universal 10mm spacers from my local car shop and had a go at getting the alloys on this afternoon. I really needed 15mm extra clearance so tickled the caliper a bit with an angle grinder. Alas it was still not enough and I would have to run the bolts without washers just to gain enough bite into the hub and even then it would be close. So admitting defeat for now I cheered myself up by ghetto refurbing two of the steels using the washing up liquid masking technique! So it looks like the LEGA's are up for sale and I am on the lookout for something else, got any ideas?

How about some original VW alloys? (Not that I have any). Re-furbed steels look much better by the way.

Ok been quite busy with this over the last couple of weeks as I wanted to take it to the retroshow at Santa Pod. Its also my daily driver so needs to look good and be reliable. Ok first things first, exhaust was the wrong one but I got one from my local exhaust place for ÂŁ31 (mates rates). Shelled out on ÂŁ55 worth of bolt on hubmetric spacers for the front to clear the calipers. Wheels finally fitted on front. So with that sorted I treated them to a refurb and after about 4hrs work on each wheel they ended up looking like this. Bolted them on and this was the result. I am pretty happy with the look but I also managed to score a vintage Thule roof rack from a 91 year old lady. She responded to my wanted ad in the local rag and I gave her ÂŁ20 for it. So thats it for the moment, made the retroshow and it was on the www.retrocarclub.co.uk stand. The front will need to be lowered very soon, prob just lop a coil off. Cant remember the options for uprating it, was it Sierra Cosworth rear springs? MrJ? ??

Did a bit of ghetto lowering and managed to even it out today. One coil removed without even taking the wheel off! I would like to get it lower but its so soft and with the increased front track it would rub on the arches. Also the tire size is not right, needs to have a 175/60/13 I think. So will keep an eye out for some used cossie rear springs and some uprated B2 fronts. As it stands now, poor pic I know.

Ok a bit of an update! Still in use as my daily so putting plenty of miles on the old girl. Done a bit more fetling, tidying and a few low budget mods. I bought some yellow glass paint from a craft shop and tinted the headlights and will run it like this until the rozzers get the knock. Also purchased some alloy number plates which clean up its look. I think it would look better with black and silver ones but I don't want to run the risk. I have picked up some oblong spot/fog lamps and a late square AA badge today at the local VW show. Will be fitting these this week in preperation for the gathering, cant wait!
