So, which magazine title is the best? Long out of print or not... Best features, best tech, best photography, best writing, which is top of the retro tree? Discuss...... To narrow it down, talking about road cars, not motorsport, featuring 60's, 70's and early 80's cars. Interested to know what to look out for 2nd hand, at autojumbles etc.

Cars and car conversions was my all time favourite back in the day. Sadly no longer in print, but a magazine using the same logo and a similar name is now available, but it's all about motorsport

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Street Machine from '79 till about '89 was top of the pile ( still have all mine! ) And Fast Car when it first started was brilliant too ( before it went all Max Power! ) This is an early 90s copy

Early 90s street machine and custom car magazines for me deff. Still have a reasonable collection from 1992-96. Not that retro, but amazing stuff and a different style to anything you see these days.

CCC back in the 80s was brilliant. In depth tech articles about things like turbo conversions and suspension theory, along with real behind-the-scenes looks at the workings of the Group B cars and all kinds of other machinery. CAR was the best new-car magazine (still is IMO), old ones are always worth a look

CCC was excellent back in the day but seemed to lose its way in the later years when it was just full of Caterhams, Scoobys and Mitsi EVOs and it became apparent that you couldn't be a car enthusiast unless you owned one of the three and spent every waking hour on a track day. Until the Mid-90s it was an excellent read though. SM I read avidly until from the mid 80s until 92-93. Also excellent. I read CC at the same time but I don't think it was as good, at least partly because the editor was quite a long way up his own . Fast Car when Dave Walker wrote for it was very good too. It went a bit Pete Tong when they locked horns with Max Power though. Not sure which was best but it seems to me that, at any given time, there's one mag that's ahead of the pack. Currently it's PPC (for me), prior to that it was Practical Classics, prior to that CCC, prior to that SM I think.

Street Machine. Unfortunately, I think that catering for 'us lot' is what killed it!

I agree about CCC too used to be great then turned into Lotus Elise monthly.
Rmad - Nail on head. Think they made the change 3-5 years too early would have been mega now.

Isn't it CHP? (Clive Househam?)
If you want to run a magazine you need people to buy it and people to advertise in it. A bunch of people who build budget cars and only buy stuff that's cheap because it's been badly listed on ebay do not make for a good target audience.

What about PPC? Next best thing to the old CCC which I used to subscribe to before it went pop. At least PPC is quite techy, Retro seems to be more style orientated. Oh, and PPC has my car in it this month, not that it makes me biased.
