Okay this is possibly dull, but I'm started to get interested in it!...
My other half drives the Mk3 Golf to and from work each day and it uses up crazy ammounts of fuel as it has to do both motorway and in town travelling. I've been using the Seicento and getting ludicrous amounds of mpg out of it,... I've got rather used to this!...
Now at some point cars will all get swapped around again and sold and moved on... SO... What motorway cruiser would be good for town driving and offer top notch mpg... what can be done to improve the mpg?
I'm thinking maybe Civic 1.4 ? Or something equally exciting?
What do you guys reckon?

What motorway cruiser would be good for town driving and offer top notch mpg... what can be done to improve the mpg? You may have to look for an oil-burner The fleet was added to a few months back. Mrs Alpineandy stopped using the R5 Diesel and started using the 'dirt cheap' ebay R21 GTX as her workhorse. The fuel bill trebled... Now she won't give up the comfort/sun roof/PAS etc...)

Golf Mk2 (if you must) + TD(red)i.....?
For myself, the grand plan is Kadett Wagon + GM / Isuzu 1700TD. OK, so still not a massive road-buner, but more than adequate for town / motorways / towing smallish things / uprooting medium sized trees etc.

yeah its gotta be diswol all the way, the direct injection cars sip fuel like the old guy at the bar with the warm beer.
Question for me is, why does my dads diesel burner have a dump valve stock from the factory? (BMW 530d new one)

Anything with a Golf TDi Motor in it.... Mk1 or 2, scirroco would be cool, Pissrat if you use one from an Audi..... Do A search on TDI RS and you will turn up a serious MK2 Golf ;D Huge power and torque with stupid frugal fuel economy ;D I want to do Mrs Doms Golf3 convertible with a TDI lump and 6 speed..... Now if only I could fit the Haldex 4wd system as well I could sell the winter syncro and cut down the fleet by one ;D

can you run diesel engines on LPG?

My ex had a Peugeot 106 1.1 XN....stay with me on this one.....and asides from being a hoot to drive, cheap to insure, it returned some serious mpg - I made £10 worth of petrol last from Bath back to Oxford. I could quite easily drive with the reserve light for 60 miles.
The bodywork is a bit flimsy but they're reasonable tough little things.

can you run diesel engines on LPG? No, but any petrol motor can be converted. A word of warning though: the only reason LPG is so cheap is because the government have not taxed it yet. You actually get less mpg out of an LPG motor than you would running petrol - the ones I've seen anyway. Once Tony whacks on the tax you'll be out of pocket. Diesel's the way to go.

Probably something to do with the 'handover' between the small and the large blowa! The other advantage of these 'old-tech' diesels is that you can run them on any old sh1te - paraffin, Kero, chip fat, cherryade, cat curse word, coal dust (almost), in fact owt you've got lying around!

They have indeed, its a twin sequential VGT turbo set up made by Garrett, almost 2 turbos sharing one hotside casting with a valve to switch between Hi and Low pressure turbos. Very neat installation, but you have a lot of space down the side of an I6 You should try doing the same on a V6 TDI .... I don't list it amongst the "10 design jobs I really want to do" but it pays the bills ;D

Nah - the 530D has a single Turbo, the 535D has the twin, sequential turbos MKIII Gold TDi running on biodiesel gets my vote. Styled like Emiel's finest *n

You can actually get LPG conversions on diesel`s. But diesel is used at the same time as the LPG and it helps burn all the diesel and gives a lot more power. I have looked at a couple of discoverys with that conversion. There are only a handful of places in th UK that do the conversion.
Strange as it sounds but there is a bloke in Scotland using a Land rover discovery for tarmac and forest stage rallys. With a diesel and LPG conversion putting out 280BHP apparently ;D

I just don't trust the government to hold off on the tax. Or, if there are too few LPG cars going round, I don't trust the fuel companies to announce it's "Uneconomical" to offer LPG any more, just like they did with LRP 4-Star
