I thought his reaction was a bit weird. I asked him, "how much movement is there on price?" he replied "none". He could have at least offered taking £50 off but no, nothing. I reckon he thought I was a done deal and so was protecting his pennies. He wasn't rude at all, nice guy and I think he is very straight but I was surprised that he wouldn't even enter into any negotiations. Seems weird to me as the bodywork will need to be done by himself before too long if he keeps hold of it. Oh well, have to see with time. As some of you guys have said though, it's not as if there is a choice of different examples.

I'd be willing to pay a premium for that over a Sprint. The two door shell and rarity make up for extra insurance costs!
I can't see the opportunity of finding another cropping up that often and you couldn't build it for less even if you don't count the time and effort involved. Assuming it's not a death trap I'd say £1500-2500 is about the price range and if £2000 is what it'll take to get it from him then so be it. It'd be a lot more if it was an Escort!
If you can use it now and it's not going to need a load spending in the near future then I say buy!

From experience i would say a modded two door base model will be cheaper to insure than a standard high performance one. for example the insurance on my 2 ltr mini was £250 whereas a standard Astra GTE would have been over a grand

Could you not get a mate to go and look at it,offer less than you did,Give it a week after that and then call him up and offer him a higher price?

i would say try and get him to meet you some way in between say £1850 or £1900 you obviously want the car and will regret not getting it plus you do have the cash to get it so go get it . i bought cars that people have said cost way over the odds but to me for what car they were they were worth getting

Its far easier to buy a car than sell one so my advice would be to walk away leaving your number with the guy! I bet hell come-a-calling in a few days! Especially in the current financial climate!

If I was in the same situation with a car that's not being advertised for sale, doesn't need to be sold but I'd asked how much would get it, then the answer is the price I'd pay or I'd leave it but I wouldn't expect to knock it down! Now if it was advertised for sale, I'd viewed it and thought it was woth less or needed more work than it should for the price I'd give my reasons and make a politly lower offer. As a seller one of my pet hates is someone who asks "what's the lowest you'll take mate?" and then tries to knock you down further, really boils my p*ss ;D

If you really want it, buy it (assuming you've got the cash). In a few month's time when you're loving it the extra £250 wont matter. But if you lose it for the sake of £250 you might regret it.
If you've tried your best to chip him and he wont shift on the price then you'll either have to shell out or walk away. Sometimes you have to pay a bit over the odds for stuff you really want.

£250? the price of a couple of good nights out with the missus. It'd cost you more in time and parts than what he wants for the car, more if you were paying someone else to do it. Wave 1900 under his nose, if he still says no, then fair play to the man, he sticks to his guns. I've had cars that I know I'd rather keep than take a penny less than my price in mind.

if you like it just buy it, if not then don't, i cant be arsed with wondering about values, if i think something is worth having i'll have it and i don't care, buying a modified old car is hardly a sensible desicion so why try to justify it like one?

have you the means to actually stack £1700 in £20 notes under his nose. I think that would talk to me.

you are asking us for an opinion on whether you should buy the car.
I think you have answered your own question by asking.
The car is obviously not what you are looking for. If the car was MINT you would have bought it already. no questions asked.
get the price down to cover any work it needs to get it mint within your budget. If the seller declines then wait until you find a better or cheaper one.

Obviously not my money, but if it was I would be buying this toledo and using the extra £1700 or so to get it how I wanted it. Or buy it, spend two years taking it apart and not finding the time to finish it before selling it on as an unfinished project. Alternatively, buy the £2k one and enjoy the driving straight away! ;D

I think by now your mind is made up, but will you kick yourself for not getting it over £250? If so buy it. But ensure it's just the bodywork that you are not happy with and that the rest is sound.

Usually I'm very much of the opinion that, even if it's the last one on the planet and he only wanted a tenner for it, if he wouldn't knock a couple of quid off for cash I'd walk I always leave haggle room on stuff I sell. Stick a few quid extra on what I want for it, that way I get what I want, they think they've got a bargain cos they beat me down to whatever. And every now and then you get lucky and get full asking price ;D TBH I can be pretty cold about this sort of thing; on one or two occasions I've left it long enough to end up with the car free! If it were me (which it isn't) I'd be a touch narked that he's misled a bit over condition (if that's what 'not as good as I hoped' means). If it needs £400 spent on it then it's not that mint is it? Based on that I might've bid £1500, but if your gut says £1750, stick to your guns and walk. Pop back in a week or three and try again. You might get lucky or at least find some middle ground

Just my thoughts but Ive been there done that got the tee shirt etc !!! If you want the car then buy it at the price.Do a little bit of overtime and make back the £250 you didnt save ?? If you don't buy it you will regret it forever, probably someone near you will get it and everytime you see it you will CRY !! Go on buy it. ;D
