Welcome to 2009, day two and the 190,000 mile engine of the family Golf lies in several pieces over the devon countryside having grenaded itself on our new year break. £700 golf, £2000 repair bill equals new car.
So, we have £2000, maybe £3000 at a push and need a new thing. It needs to be diesel, it needs to be an estate that fits two kids and a medium sized dog and it must be reasonable on the go juice.
I'm thinking Laguna (they do seem p*** cheap), but a big old merc also sounds interesting. Any ideas?

Lagunas are cheap because they eat engines spectacularly.
Old merc would be ace. But even the dizzle ones are pi$$-poor on fuel compared to new stuff.
TBH, for that money I vote Focus. Yeah, a crappy ford, not a 'quality' german car. Get the newest, lowest miles, highest spec '1st generation' car you can, and you won't go wrong. The quality of the newer model ones (05-onwards) is terrible compared to the older ones, which have a real feel of solidity (much better screwed together than the Picasso we have now). We did over 50k in ours in less than 2 years and it never ever gave a moments trouble. I don't recall having to do ANYTHING except change the oil & fuel filter. Nice to drive too. Not hugely exciting, but nice.

My mate has a 2.2 diesel Laguna estate with 7 seat conversion, 80k miles, full history, family car never thrashed, always cared for - and the headgasket went and it cooked the head with it, and he pulled over at first signs of hotness.
I would deffo say focus estate TDDi (another friend has one on coilovers) and its a peach - generally good old bus, or again - i'd also say anything VAG, but youve tried that... I think some late volvo esates also had the 5 cyl VAG diesel in them - good chug-a-lugs too (2.4 or 2.5 I think)
As above too, if you get an omega with the 2.5 6cyl BMW engine, you'll not look back (or look for a BMW e36 325TDS tourer)

I'll second the Focus, and the Mondeo gets a bonus mention too. Rover 75 also worth a look, as is a Pissrat or an A4. Only buy French if you're fond of fixing niggly faults on a regular basis, though when it's working properly, our 206 SW Hdi 2.0 D Turbo is a darned good car...

Use the diesel for washing your kegs in. The diesel will lubricate the cotton fibres and make them last longer although your nads will honk of diesel. Also don't use red diesel for this for obvious reasons.

I had a 04 Reg Focus 1.8TDCi and hated it, It had done only 60k but it would keep cutting out all the time, the Engine ECU light would come on and off, the boot started going rusty, and one day the plastic sump cover fell off and got jammed on my steering rack, Wish I kept my old W reg Audi A4 I traded in for it. Given the club connection, I'd be wanting a Pug estate. Something with a bit of retro appeal. We've had a few lovely Pug load luggers on here lately - a 405 and a 505 for ultimate lugging win!

Yuck! Ford CAN NOT do diesels. Horrible things. Incorrect. I found the 1800 TD DI to be pretty dang good for something with only 90bhp. Certainly more flexible than the "HDi" 2.0 we have now and the downright disgusting 1.7 vauxhall dizzla I had in my Mk4 Astravan - what's the point of a deezle with no torque on it? ;D

i got the 1.7 di in my astra, you are right, no torque. but mines got 160k on it and strong as ever

how many pumps has the astra had and the focus is the same with pump failure i just don't like dervs especially the modern ones and that's purely from working on them on a daily basis i would have to say the merc would be the best but then why not look at petrols or something on lpg

It is the 130PS version so it does shift (as soon as the mechanic recodes the injector) and I get reasonable economy - it comfortably fits the Mrs, 2 kids and a dog and still enough room for another adult!
Just a bit VERY dull to drive but very safe I suppose...
Preference would be an E34 525 TDS Touring with a manual box though...

You can get an ST version with 6-speed but I don't know if they fall in budget. I'm a little biased here, but an e34 525TDS touring would be great too. Really nice engine - 141BHP and 260Nm torque. Very good on fuel too. Very handsome car aswell I think. The e39 has the same engine but again, dunno if you could get a touring for under two grand. Mine's the less powerful TD but I get the same MPG figures.
