What a great buy!
At the risk of upsetting MrB, I think not lowering it would be a more heinous crime! You can always put longer springs in when you've had your fun!
With budget in mind, a set of BMW E30 15" BBS would fit the bill - and have the RWD offset you need. I had a set on my Passat, they'll probably have a set of 205/55s on them, which'll certainly beef it up a bit. If you're thinking full-on Euro though...then look out for some 13" compomotives or alleycats off rally slag Chevettes, Mantas and Vivas!

I can certainly tolerate a wheel change, and could even sanction lowering if its done properly and the old springs are put in a cupboard for later! I'm not a control freak...! B
But surely, primer and angle grinders on the springs would be unforgiveable on such a minter!

B But surely, primer and angle grinders on the springs would be unforgiveable on such a minter! Putting primer on already good paint makes absolutely no sense, I agree with you there...I wouldn't advocate any body mods on that Carlton. There's not a great deal of difference in chopping the springs and buying replacement if and/or when required. With a car as superbly styled as your coupe then standard can work really well (although it would still be better slammed! , but in reality we're talking about an old estate car here...the lowering will be the factor that opens the eyes of the less-educated enthusiast. My Cressida is just an old-but-not-recognised-as-a-classic saloon...would it be anywhere near as popular with people without the lowering and the wheels? No way! Do the Carlton justice...don't wreck it, just a few mods will open up a whole new world of respect!

You may struggle to get a set of these at what you or I would call a 'budget' price. There's been quite a renaissance recently (ep. on a certain e30 forum where the frantic c0ck-waving is too much to bear), and I've seen good sets changing hands for up to £300 Apparently this is because they are better for 'drifting' than Alpina's etc. You'll find that the near-identical 14-inch versions can be picked up muchos cheapo though....

You are clearly wrestling with your own self-conscience vis-a-vis modding of late Mr B - I'm sure people who wore beige cardigans (you must've put your best one on this morning) were getting a slagging from you a couple of days ago.
IMO - fit some lowering springs, alloys if you must but not beemer rims: clearly the wheels of choice should be a nice set of black/gold alleycats! Get it looking ever cleaner and mintier, oh and breathe on the engine a bit. Sorted!

Aha! you're sort of right! Indeed I abide by a strict made-up code about what modz are acceptable and when they should be applied, but I wasn't by any means slagging cardigan-wearing as that would make me a bigot! I was slagging forum-based 'internet wisdom' spouting forth from various folks orifices after reading a river of it about tyre-stretching, the safety thereof, etc etc etc.
