can someone please clarify this swallow tail thing.

I'm not much of a Golf officiando, so can we see some golf arses to show the differences....

Yeah, i've been troubled by my narrow wheels since I was about five Thing i'm not sure on the offset or stud pattern that Burago used for this model. Obviously with those arches I could probably go for something like a 1/2" wide rim? Rmad - can you help?

BTW - I think it might only be a small rear light model Golf, not a swallowtail

Not really all that much to get excited about, surely?
I assume it was designed out to cut production costs (a flat panel being cheaper to make than a shaped one).
Surely most mainstream production cars have little tweaks and tucks here and there, even early on in the production run.
In 20 years time, will a non-v-grille Astra Mk3 be an uber-desirable item?

Only in the crazy world of Volkswagencould this be something to get excited about....

Yeah, there are a lot of other differences with the swallowtails Mk1's that you wouldn't notice unless you were a major VW perv...

I had an Autobook manual for pre '75 Mk1's, lots of different stuff in there - front drum brakes for one!
Sold the book to a lad with a nice swallowtail Mk1 strangely enough...
In some of the early press shots for brochures etc you see the VW garages with a Mk1 up on a ramp servicing front drums.

As for the model Mk1 - looks cool! I have a Mk1 Polo model which is a 'racing' one, not got the arch extensions etc but it must be getting on a bit as I've had it about 20 yrs - remember playing with it as a kid!

But still not an uncommon thing to happen.... Think about the Escort Mk5!
After it was roundly (and fairly) criticised for being shi­t, it was re-hashed about 18-months after it was launched.



So, with that in mind.... were they designing out flaws or designing in cheaper production. If the former is the case, then rarity is not much of a justification for desirability, as the later models would have been better cars.

Then again, VW at least carried out what they had in mind for the restyle, the remodelled MkV Escort's just as sh*t as the early one! ;D ;D ;D

I don't think the exiting thing is the fact that the rear panel is a little bit different, its the fact that it's the very first models of Golf which makes them rare - most of them have rusted away like Beetles used to do, before VW got their rustproofing right. I'm sure a Mk1 Escort is quite rare, and is priced accordingly, no? Also, the styling updates of 1976 were probably penned by VW themselves rather than by Ital Design's Giugiaro, as the early design had poor driveability, high noise levels, poor interior quality and engine mount and alignment problems. Seems odd, but the inferior early models are therefore more desireable than the later ones.

The desire for earlier models is really a continuation of the whole VW thing where, in the majority of cases the earlier the better. It goes back to the oval window thing.
You have to admit those earlier Golfs have a cleaner, sharper look.
