Really? So after the lightening's jumped god knows how far on it's journey to earth it's foiled by a gap less than 12" between a car and the ground...amazing stuff. The car actually creates a "Faraday Cage", its nothing to do withthe tyres, as the tyres themselves contain wire anyway. 2 examples of this have been seen on TV, once with Hammond on Topgear doing it in a golf at german high voltage test lab, & one on "100 things to do before you die"

As HTW noted - Lightening goes up, not down.

Lightning goes from the earth upwards The most basic type of lightening does indeed go from the ground to a cloud and a return stroke follows that leader path back to the ground but by no means is this the only type . Different types include cloud to ground, ground to cloud, cloud to cloud, spries (cloud to outer space) heat lightening (very distant diffused behind clouds) and ball lightening (a near the ground type).

Got some cracking photos in last nights storm bit difficult with a digital camera that doesnt have a B-stop. Just had to keep taking photos with a 15 second exposure. Cool pics! I drove up to a local vantage point (Parbold Hill) to try and get some pics with my digi cam. But if I tried holding a 15 second exposure, the picture went completely over-exposed. I guess its trial and error.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.
