I'm sort of leaning towards the robin hoods now as iv looked on ebay and they have prices of around 3000. plus iv hopefully found someone who can paint it for me. any information on them or anything that i need to know about, any problems etc?
ill see how i feel when i have enough money for a robin hood and ill then decide whether to keep saving for a westfield or splash out on a robin hood or other replica

Hi goaferboy I see youre in Banbury. I am Banbury boy aswell.
I know of a couple of guys in Banbury with 7 kits. Ones a Westfield and the others a Tiger.
The Tiger has just been finished and looks fantastic. I could ask the owner for some advice for you.

yeah that would be good. any advice is appreciated, especially on the westfield as i was originally thinking of getting one or those. I'm not going to get one for a while (need to raise the money first) so ill probably change my mind quite a few times between now and when/if i get one. I'm aiming to get one between this summer and next summer.
is the car in the signature yours? iv never seen it around before. i rarely see any kit cars around banbury. my mates see an orange and black seven style around but i never see them

Ouch. Look at something 1400cc or less. Specialist insurance should get you under a grand TPFT, garaged. You don't need a 2 litre car. Trust me - You'll end up killing yourself and/or others. 1400cc K series...Or even a bike engine. Where's that Locost boy when you need him? I'm sure he has plenty of info about this sort of thing! *n Ooh ooh I'm over here ;D Don't go Robin Hood!!! Don't do it!! For a first Sevem there are a lot better ones. Robin Hoods are notoriously difficult to build, ill fitting parts, and are often built by people who don't always know the best way. Have a look around MK, GTS, MNR, Luego, Stuart Taylor or any of the manufacturers. If you want me to answer any particular questions just ask as I know about most of the major manufacturers. Engine-wise don't go too modern. Maybe a CVH or Pinto. Adam

basically what I'm going to do is keep saving untill i see one i can afford that doesnt look too bad. i don't want to build my own mainly because i wouldnt trust anything id built myself. plus I'm impatient. I'm basically looking for one i can afford thats within reasonably driving distance from where i live (near banbury)
don't westfields come with a pinto engine? iv seen some on autotrader (which is the place id rather get one from because its easier to find local cars) that come with them.
now that robin hoods are out of the question I'm back towards my original desire, a westfield. mainly because autotrader only has a section for caterhams and westfields. i exepct ill buy a copy of which kitcar when i have enough money (for the car not the magasine!) and look for one thats suitable for me on autotrader and in the magasine

The car in the pic is mine. I used to drive it round Banbury a couple of years ago when it was blue. (the car not the town) Its been off the road since as its being restored. You may see me about in my blue Imp but I'm not in Banbury that much as I live in Aston le Walls and only use Banbury for shopping.
I will have a chat about the Tiger and Westfield at work on Monday and will let you know what i find out.

Some westfields do, as they are based on sierras, but people who can afford westfields tend to stick in Zetecs or Vx engines.

are they any good? are there any engines i should avoid? i don't really want a bike engine as they have no reverse (correct me if I'm wrong) and a reverse module (rc car term not sure if its the same for 1:1 cars) would only complicate things for me id imagine.

Yes, reverse boxes do tend to be a bit of a weakness. If I were you I'd look out for a zetec or CVH engined car if you are worried about the weight of the pinto, due to availability of parts and they tended to be easy to fit, and therefore unlikely to be bodged. They create a decent amount of power as standard and are easy to tune aswell.

I asked at work today about insuring a 7 kit.
The Tiger owner is 28 and insures his on his trade policy i think.
The Westfield owner is in his 50s and insures his with Footman James.
Neither can really help. I think you will need to do some serious phoning around for some quotes.

iv done a quote search on autotrader and i got back around 3 grand if i want to insure one today and 2 grand if i wanted to insure one in a year when I'm 21. thats fully comp. thats also with normal insurers, would i get it cheaper if i went for a kit car insurer? i don't mind paying 2 grand as i payed 1,300 per year for my golf and thats a peice of curse word (looks nice-ish though), i don't mind paying more for one of my favourite cars.

just thought id use this thread to ask another question (believe me trawling through almost 30 odd pages to find this thread wasnt fun)
i know most kit cars vary in quality but i just want a general idea, how well do westfields age? i was looking at a few from the late 80s/ early 90s and they seemed in good condition. but seeing as my golf was from the same sort of year i have a few doubts. granted my golfs done 120,000 miles and most westfields have done ridiuclously little in comparison, but if it hasnt done as many miles then its just been sat around for 15 years.
so how reliable in general would the engines be? i don't want a car that goes like stink but only does it when it feels like it and with only half the bits attatched. ill hopefully be taking someone who knows a bit about cars with me but he wont be able to tell how reliable it is.
