just thinking out loud really, need info on how strong or not a mk1 rear axle is- I assume its a mk1 as the front axle has drums its just a single wheel jobbies, not twin. oh, and whats the standard wheel size/bolt pattern?

It's either going to be based on a Capri or Anglia/Escort axle I would expect. If it's Capri it'll be pretty tough but it will probably have silly gearing like 4.4 or 5:1 since it's off an old van with a top speed of about 60. Bolt pattern was weird on them, wide 5 stud but not as wide as the old Pop/Beetle pcd.

a daft ratio would be beneficial to me the actualy tubes are more 'squared' than tubular, if that helps identification...... I'm still trying to find out what the bolt pattern is, and the wheel size, as ive not seen the wheels yet only the axles.

the bolt pattern will be 5x160, standard wheel size 14x5 1/2", not sure on the strength of the axle, people have put v6's etc in them and i havn't heard of them being perticularly weak might be worth an ask on fordtransit.org/forum/ they know their stuf there and theres a fair few who have done big conversions. FYI the mk2 has pretty much the same body as the mk1 so a lot of the bits are the same, my mk2 has a square section type axle too, its called a "H" type, the ratio will be on the little metal tag that is under one of the bolts whats it for? the model A? is that a unique bolt pattern then? works out about 5x6-1/4"? 14s is no good really, i was hoping 15s or 16s, as the silly ratios wont matter as i plan on running tall x-plies. I'm sure i can cut the centres out though and fit them to something else.... your infos definately been useful though. basically ive scored the front and rear axles(plus whatever else i can find in the bushes ), as i say i know its mk1 as its drums on the front. as for whats it for, i don't know yet!! i know the front spindles and brakes can be fitted to a model A or pilot axle if you ream it, so i was thinking of keeping the lot and throwing together a little modifed, possibly pinto powered, when i get chance.

the bolt stud is that on most transits, except i think twin wheelers may have been 6 stud and i'm not 100% on the latest ones either.
I'm running 15" wellers on mine, re-drilled landrover ones (5x165)
wish i had more space to collect stuff for random projects like that, could see it getting out of hand quickly though!

id just figured out that landies are the closest bolt pattern landy 16" steels is something i have a few of it looks like this project could have legs.... and wheels ive even got a gearbox that would work, just need a cheap pinto or something like to attach it to. throw a couple of pop rear springs and a land rover steering box, column and wheels into the mix, and its half done!!

Hi Dez, fancy a Taunus Transit front axle with drums(5*160), leaf springs and some 15" steelies? I´ve always thought they would look good on a Hot Rod, and they´re built to last!! ;D Edit, just read you´re after a rear axle sorry. I´ve got a rear axle to match if your interested with 5,14 ratio

BriSCA F1 Stock Cars use transit axles front and back - biggest engine I've seen in an F1 was a 572 cubic inch big block chevy...
There are several types of transit axle though & not all as good as the next - there is one type that comes with an LSD as well IIRC.
The stock car boys mod them to hold more diff oil, run adjustable multi-link suspension, discs, fit some additional oil seals in them & some run a diff oil cooler - but then they are thrashing the f*** out of a 600 BHP race car, so it is probably required!

how cheap is a cheap pinto dez.... if you know what I mean! -kev i really should NOT be buying one right now, but.......... sub-£50- maybe stretch to £75 if its got a flywheels and clutch. doesnt need to have any form of exhaust, or alt, but inlet manifold and carb would be beneficial. it don't have to be a pinto though, a X-flow would also do the job. i may find one on the bushes form this transit yet though!!

i had a bit of a mare finding a good pinto for a reasonable price, i really didn't relish the idea of shelling out for a duff one. the demand seems to have risen above supply recently.
in the end i got a scrap sierra for more than any scrap car is worth and got a very good injection 205 engine with all bits, and made much more money back selling the other bits. someone paid £100 for the steering column!

that not bad i suppose- little more than i wanted to pay, but it seems theyve gone up in price a bit recently. ile bear it in mind, if not ile go for something else, budget will be everything on this.
as for body, i really don't know. whatever turns up at the right price. id like it if i could pick something up in steel, even if its jsut a colw and i fab the rest, but realistically itll be a glass 27T RPU tub, without the bed.

yeah, summat like that would do it. the best thing would be some nondescript 4 door pheaton that i can use the back panel, 2 doors and the cowl of, would make a great little tub. but otherwise, a ruby cowl and rough doors if possible would do fine

I've run a 283 Chev through a really early transit diff. No problems and the car rally guys in the 70's used the axles in Escorts etc .Unbreakeble as it happens. Mk3 Zephyr or Zodiac CROWN wheel and pinions are a bolt in fit...if you can still find them to gear them up for a more sane ratio.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

I has treasure!! rear axle- not investigated this yet. you can also see theres front and rear springs and the prop too. front axle- I removed the drums with the my size L adjusting stick, and they're actually really good- id swear they were new not long before they spent 20+ years sat in a hedge! just need a sand up. then I evicted everything living in the drums, the brake bits are a bit rough, it'll need shoes, cyls, and adjusters to get em servicable. wheel bearings are good though, and the backplates are sound. kingpins are seized, hopefully I can fee em off without too much hassle. ive left em soaking. the steering arms cane off ok too. and as an added bonus, the steering box!! albeit in 2 bits. luckily there was enough grease on both ends for it to stay in good condition, even though it was buried!! (super hardcore, digging up the bits for my car!! ) theres no wear and a good clean and rebuild will see it useable. I also slotted a landy wheel on the hub, and the bolt pattern looks a lot less than 5mm out. theyll go on I recon. so, ive accidentally got half the bits to build another car!!
