Well, a filty rainy nasty spring morning saw the ZS in convoy with around 25 other Peugeots (mostly 205's but also a 405 Mi16 and somw 306's) heading for Castle Combe, where the rain proceeded to set in big time.
An hour or so's track watching showed us just how slippery the circuit was as cars were sliding all over the place. Great fun, except that I was thinking..."it's my turn soon!"
Driving out onto the circuit was a nightmare of wheelspin and spray as we started our first lap. All sorts of cars were out there, a few Pugs, Honda's, Rover turbo's and assorted hot hatches.
Sadly the track was so wet that it was third and fourth gear only as anything lower meant the wheels just went mad! A complete lack of track driving up to this point meant I was on a steep learning curve. This was also the first time I had been able to really test out the suspension and brakes on the ZS.
Luckily everything seemed to hold together and I started to go a bit faster, until I forgot about a chicane and locked everything up in a mad panic. Still I got round.
A few more slips and slides later and it was all over. The highlight was the driver of a track 205GTi confessing that he had to work really hard to get past me! He then offered to buy the ZS!! Despite her 24 years and the almost complete incompetance of her driver the ZS proved to be just as good as much more modern Peugeots! If only I could drive on a track I'm sure we would be right on the pace with the best of the 205's.
During the day, several people popped by to say they thought the ZS was the car of the day and several mentioned how good it sounded out on the track. My helmet muffled all the good noises inside!
So, a great day despite the rain. A dry track would probably have allowed hte more powerful cars to go much faster, but then I had very little grip either. A few more mods to go now, a proper roll cage and seatrs plus the removal of all non essential fixtures and fittings, hopefully the track at the French car Show will be dry.

Brilliant!! My only track experience was a Mini World Action Day at Castle Combe years ago - the first year of the magazine, I think! Thoroughly enjoyed it

Excellent...a few more words and a couple of pics and it'd make a good article for the RR 'features' page. Maybe next time you should swap with a 205 driver for a couple of laps to which is best - you, the car...or both!

GTi was 1.6 8v You can see it in the background of the pic!
Unless you mean can I uprade my engine. In which case ...no the TU motor won't fit in the XY engine bay. (Well not without major major surgery).

You must have such a laugh, what!? I'd love to have a bash at a bit of track driving such as that! Was it all club organised? How much did it cost!? Weather looks entertaining, but I reckon your ZS could be a pretty demon tool in the wet... short, light, fwd on not-massively-wide tyres... not sure I'd fancy a track that wet in the bimmer - the back end would be twitchier than a bagful of badgers! ;D

Heh. yes I recon the wet was my secret weapon. Even the Evo's etc were struggling and they have every computer in the world helping out! If your interested the main gallery of pics is here www.auto-focus.co.uk/The demon car of the day was the Passat! God knows what was under the bonnet but it ate every other car there for breakfast. Best guess was a 4motion with an R32 motor dropped in with what looked very much like 2 turbos for good measure. Also check out the 400BHp cosworth engine Dolly sprint. He had a few traction issues!!

There are no options only using Renault 14 pistons and liners to give 1558cc. Then maybe throttle bodies and mapped ignition thingy. It's XY or nothing in these cars!

Sounds like you had a great time ;D It's a great experience ain't it?? Missed this one as I had to look after the little one as missus worked the morning & I wasn't going to drag her up in that weather - just not fair on her or me!! ;D Mate's were up there in a blue Zetec'd Mk1 Escort & a Alan Mann Rep Mk1 - the latter e-mailed me yesterday saying it was good & he only span off about half a dozen times ...He is a bit of a nutter behind the wheel mind Now you have the bug spose you'll be at every one from now on ;D ;D

Saw both of those escies. The Alan Mann rep failed hte noise test and had to have a silencer fitted!
Fair play to both of them, the seemed to be giving it beans, certainly going by the tail happy goings on!

Nice vids GVK, you were really flying! You must know the circuit a bit. Great to see you dispatching all those other cars, esp the VX!!
Next time I might try and go out with someone who can shout turn, brake etc for a bit!

Thanks, I think i've done combe only a couple of times, enjoyed the track more than before as it's the first time i'd used proper tyres there.. A048R Yokohamas which were fantastic on the dry and damp track, but not so great in the morning when it was a tad wet
