I've been thinking recently, and its the fault of Meatballturbo and his fancy pants mp3/nav flat screen thingie. Hows about super luxuriating a retro car, an old executive model would be favourite. So strip out the interior and sound proof it with modern very high quality sound proofing. Electric windows, central locking, heated leather seats, flatscreen nav/sound system, dvd player, luxurious carpeting basically anything that'll make it the most comfortable luxurious car you can get. Some things that I'd love to know more about in regards to this, the sunroof in the Maybach, that changes opacity at the touch of a switch. The doors in modern Mercs (and I'm sure others) that when you shut the door they stop themselves short then shut themselves, is that electric or a weighted hinge? Just a thought, I'm sure someone has already thought it and done it all though

I think the self-closing doors on S-Class Mercs etc are powered by an electric motor... And if you're going to build something like that, I vote you start with one of these beauties: Opel Diplomat V8

Is that a German only car or is their a UK equivilent? As far as I know there was no UK equivalent... From just before the Opel-Vauxhall rationalisation I think. 5 litre V8!! ;D

Doors are electric like the trunk lids on high-end American cars over here. Same stuff. Maybach sunroof is liquid crystal. Only clear when power is applied. Debuted the stuff years ago as a new privacy option on really expensive new homes in the States. Any size you'd like. How about multiple sunroofs? Power reclining rear seats. Instrument package for the rear. Multi-zone airconditioning. (Yes I like Maybach) Satellite radio. Run flat tires. Kevlar. Drive by wire. To heck with the mini-bar, get me a bartender. 'Scuse me. time for meds.

What about something like a MK4 or MK3 Zodiac/Zephyr or the end of the line Cresta/velox models (the bigger squsrer one). Give it maximum limo tints in the rear, and maximum legal in the front.
Slam it on airbags, give it a mix of brushed alloy and carbon interior with lots of CNC work for controls and steering column shroud etc, and deepest plush leather bench seats front and back.
and and as much computerised as possible.

My suggestion for a nice lux' cruiser would be a Nissan President 4.4 V8, not too bad.

V.cool,... Didn't Practical Classics do a comparisson feature for Diplomatic cars from different countries,.. had Toyota CROWN, Citroen DS etc. etc. any of those would make for a good lux-cruiser base.
I love the idea of bench front seats too,.. nice plush leather or suede, like sitting on a sofa....

I know where there is a Merc 500 SEL for sale, it's in the Merseyside area.
I know it needs some welding (he's pretty honest) and a couple of budget Eurocarparts exhaust bits (cheapish) will get the rest of the details

I don't know that we get Practical Classics in NZ however, a comparison on the diplomatic vehicles would certainly make a good read. One of the funniest cars for the businessmen I've discovered has an HQ Holden shell, taken by Mazda and turned into a Mazda Roadpacer. It had such a high price and bad fuel consumption rate due to the fact the put one of their silly rotary engines in a car 5 times the size of theirs, so it didnt sell too well, even amongst the rich businessmen and who could blame them really when you could of picked up a myriad of classier cars from other Japanese or European manufacturers. Here's a pic and a link though, if you're interested. members2.easyspace.com/hotholdens/model/h/mazda-roadpacer.html

Got to wonder at the wisdom of putting a thirsty engine in a heavy car,.. then again Rover V8 were put into some rather weighty automobiles...

What about a tatra T700 (613). Big Czech state Limo type car Bigger than an S class. Rear engined 3.5 litre aircooled V8 You can fit a Sikorsky hellicopter supercharger, but then they are know the blow 4 feet flames on overrun. And This guy has built an apple mac into his, like I did with the PC in the Saab. and quite a tidy interior with a manual box.

I really do like the Merc 600. My mates 500SEL would look so good like that. the ZIL on the same page looks kind of cool in an "Eastern European kind of way"

That Tatra is v.funky. Love Tatras in general, but that interior is real nice.
Still trying to find out about these S-Class "door closing aids" (!!) that electric door kit is all the other stuff, remote central locking + electric opening. I guess it would be a case of finding an S-Class to butcher,.. hmmmm,...

BTW, anyone looking to mould in a screen, depending on the size of the dash you have available. lilliput 7" 16:9 screens are popular for the price, and this newish find, A lilliput 8" 4:3 ratioalthough if you have a look on the MP3 car TFT & LCD forum some people have had issues with the quality of the Lilliputs and have had to do some remedial work to get them working, although they are the cheapest way to get decent VGA quality PC graphics into a car. Couple that to an Epia M2 12000 motherboard, and An Opus 150Watt PSU PCB from LinITX (who i have noticed now have Lilliput screen, slightly dearer than Ebay, but all UK deals and warrenty etc) and you are on the way to putting together a tidy small car PC in a custom case (get the metal folding out people). Beauty about an older car is that there is so much more room behind the almost empty dash or centre console, and it isn't all filled with wiring, circuit boards and gubbins.
