because you can hop with the brake I guess. standing still on one isnt as easy as it looks I suppose, but if you have the brake on you can't pedal to balance, I would have thought it would be much easy to just stop by not pedalling and then hop. All the trial uni videos I've seen no one has ever had a brake, it just seems strange to me to have one when it's pretty useless and add a fair bit of weight.

Its used as a sort of drag brake when doing long or steep decents. Because you can't stop pedalling, your legs really start to suffer on some decents and the brake takes some of the weight off them. Also stops you from getting out of control on very steep decents. Edd

Have you had any accidents from locking the wheel up yet?, I've had a few close calls from accidentally pulling my front brake to hard on my trial bike.

I must say, in the two years I've had the brake fitted, I have only just got it dialed in and working properly. So I haven't had any face/floor incidents yet. If it happens it'll be quite comical, and I hope theres a camera rolling ;D
Nice to see theres a fair few other unicyclists out there too.

I'd like to know more too but I don't remember where I found the pic. You can build your own electric version here though. www.tlb.org/eunicycle.html

That's a Cyclemaster engine - quite common back in the 50s and early 60s. It looks like a 32cc version. That's all I can tell you.

Right that's it. The unicycle is coming out the garage again ;D
I've got a Pashley one with a large wheel and a road tyre. Always wanted one with a BMX style wheel. Are the wheels special or does the hub screw into any wheel? Might have to look into a bit of saw hack bodge weldery if not.

Are the wheels special or does the hub screw into any wheel? Might have to look into a bit of saw hack bodge weldery if not. Special hubs I'm afraid Jonny. They are a hub shell and an axle held together with a keyway. Then bearings are pressed on each end of the axle. The whole thing is then held by the bearings to the frame legs with clamps. Heres a closeup of a hub, thats without the bearings on. They are pressed on the smooth bit of the axle, the cranks locate on the splines. Here it is with bearings and cranks installed. It is then held onto the frame legs using these clamps. Hope that helps mate Edd

Hmm, mine is a bit different to that... I've never had the wheel off but the pedals have got cotter pins like on old 1970's folding bikes. The tyre exploded dramatically so it's got to come off anyway. Maybe I'll ask the bike shop how much they'll charge to re-lace my wheel with one of my BMX rims.

Not posted anything in here for a while. Recently I bought a Carbon Fibre seatbase for my Trials Uni. I ride without a seat cover or foam because I mainly ride trials, which you don't sit down for. The normal plastic bases have a metal plate to keep them stiff, but the foam and cover holds it on. When you take the stiffener off the saddle flops about like very floppy thing, so the Carbon base is a vast improvement, and looks cool ;D Also on the unicycling front. Our demo team, Voodoo Unicycles has acquired 2 new riders. Mike Taylor and Simon Berry, two young but already amazing riders. We have also just released Voodoo Unicycles T-Shirts for sale. Designed by ourselves, which has taken some time, because none of us are great artists. You can buy them through the website if you're interested. Heres a couple of Adverts we made for them. www.voodoounicycles.comEnjoy! Edd
