This weeks installation is brought to you by LONGCAT: I've just been lucky enough to enjoy a 5-day weekend where Ms_Bol is not around, this NEVER happens and I was gobbing off at work last week that "Just you wait, that maser is gonna be welded up and driving around after this weekend" to my colleagues, Sadly progress has been dismally slow, due to (among other things) One day lost changing the clutch in a friend's horrible Astra diesel builders van; One day lost arsing around with my mate shifting this manky Austin 1300 (which was in fact my first ever car back in the day) One day lost to chundering, headaches and sleeping Plus the usual plums about eating, tidying the house, taking the cat to the vet etc Which means i've barely got one decent day in on the Maz. HOPELESS! Anyway here is what I have done. last time I was up to about here, needed to make a new outrigger thing for the front edge of the floor, where the old one had turned to crisps: The old outrigger was curved in all possible directions, so I wasn't sure how best to start. after some Vic Reeves 'The Ponderers' style chin-scratching I made the rearmost side of it first of all: That would go in about here: next I made a piece to locate it in the corner like on the other side: Like so: With that clamped in I cleaned up the raggy lower edge of the inner arch and started to plate the chassis leg: Made a piece to close that corner off (the inner arch would hopefully form the forward edge of the outrigger, as per the other side): Now it was looking something like this: Another patch on the inner wheelarch to finish that edge: Heres the rear view of that, plenty of the old weld-through paint on there: Put the outrigger rear edge back on and clamped it all up: Zapped that on, it went on pretty nicely: punched the lower edge of the inner arch ready for a piece to close off the top of the outrigger. Also slathered on the weld-thru: Next I started trimming a piece to box off that outrigger: Welded on: Finished off with a good old grinder/flapwheel attack: And thats it!!!! Look at the state of the floor now, looks like about 80% new metal!!!! That was probably the worst bit of rot on the car so thats a decent milestone really. Obv I still have to put the outer sill on, do the L/H front wing tip and do something about the chassis leg but that does feel like a good bit of forward motion, even if its not as much as i'd hoped. Hopefully get that seam sealed and primed tomorrow night if all goes to plan. Cheers!

Alright gang, at long last i am off the lime mortar and facade paint and back on the tin snips + angle grinder. Not a vast amount to report since last time but its moving along. So last time the floor was sorted and it was time to have a look at fitting the new outer sill. To do that properly the door had to come off, I was sure that would result in a load of broken clips or snapped wiring or something. Heres the elec window wiring, crimped-on bullet connectors and no wire colours matching up: And heres the central locking wiring, no insulation or sealing, just boshed inside a placca clip: Anyway off came the door, so now I could get to the manky sill: I'm not sure I can face taking many more parts off this car, I need to start putting some stuff back on before I lose interest altogether! What a hopeless POS that looks like, folk popping their heads round the garage door must think 'Yeah, chances of that seeing the road again: about 0.02%" Anyway i started hacking at the back of the outer sill: Lots of spot-weld drilling: Blimey. Anyway that lot revealed some reasonably serious rot in the back of the inner sill: And round the jacking point: chopped it all out: That revealed a hole in the floor, so that got chopped as well: Finally i was able to start glueing in some new tin. Then repaired the bottom of the inner sill, inc lots of zinc primer - can't get enough of that shizz nowadays. As you can see, the jacking point 'GOT IT': This cup was in the wrong place at the wrong time, so it GOT IT as well: anyway after a fashion I was up to here, inner sill was now nice and strong: repaired the middle sill membrane thing: Now we were more or less ready for a trial fit of the new LAST REMAINING ON EARTH LH 4-DR OUTER SILL, exciting times! Oooh! Look at that! Don't think I've ever fitted a genuine OEM outer sill before, what a pleasure! I just lobbed it on and clamped it up and it sat perfectly. Door gaps are surprisingly not too critical as the door actually closes over the top of the sill and has a rubber seal sitting across the gap so I won't have to re-hang the doors before welding it up hopefully (famous last words). So I whipped it off again and boshed a quick coat of red oxide in there, some will get scrubbed off again obv before welding but it can't do any harm can it. So hopefully, next trip down the garage should see a lovely new sill installed, hopefully that will be a bit of a morale booster. LATERZ!

WHASSSEEEEAAAAPPPPPPPPP time for a quick update of bank holiday 'progress': I threatened a while back to get an auto-dimming welding mask. Well last week i chucked £60 at a parweld 916 effort off eBay, time to test it out: Seems to be bob on! Lets go down the garage: We were more or less ready to bosh the sill on. just needed to clean up the mating faces and slap a bit of the old WELD-THRU on: Some people like to have a feeling of 'readiness' for armageddon by filling their cupboards full of tinned food, stashing 2 years' worth of logs in theis shed or driving round in a massive 4wd day in day out. I like to know that when the big day comes i'll have plenty of welding clamps. Heres just a few of my survival kit: Did the top edge first: Lovely plug welds!! I'm still in a 'love haze' with the new welder. Bottom edge plugged on and linished a bit: Look at that! Th rear end of the sill/arch joint needed some attention: INside as well: The next bit was a bit of an odd shape, so I reached for the cardboard: Yum! I love Birds Eye potato waffles, the cardboards not great for this job mind as it tends to be a bit soft and damp! Not the neatest i've ever done I must admit. those patches are repairs to the innner arch panel, still got to put a strip round the outer edge to finish it off and plug the outer to the inner. At the forward end, the bottom of the wing was a bit crunchy, so i chopped it out: Drew round the old bit to try and make the new one: Welded it in with little 'spurts', still got load of distortion though All linished up: Here's where I am at C.O.P today! That now means pretty much that both sides floors and sills are now fully welded up, quite a milestone! Seeing as that was the main problem with the car. Next job is painting and sealing the floor, painting the doorshuts, putting some of the trim back and actually boshing the doors back on. Woo-hoo!!!!

Time for a brief update, i.e. an update on the condition of my briefs Sp, last time the Maser looked like this with its new sill glued on: Only bit of welding left there was to make a new jacking point, sadly i didnt take a lot of photos, but I did make use of a steel rule, tape measure and scriber instead of doeing everything by eye: Packet-wise I used ms_Xbol's discarded porridge packet which worked a treat and looks suitably healthy and middle class. Made it into this: glued it onto the floor, welds were a bit disappointing for some reason so I didnt take any close-ups of those!! However here it is installed and seam-sealed: Now then. I wanted to paint the sill and door steps so that I could re-fit the tread plates, put the doors back on, and start reassembling the interior. I'm struggling for mojo a bit with it at the mo (hence the lack of updates) and want to put some stuff back on the car instead of just removing stuff, I want to feel like its actually moving forward. So, I bought a tin of etch primer/filler stuff off the bay: And stoked up the old eleccy spray gun: I'm fuggin terrible with this spray gun, i'm telling you. I need to get some serious practice with it, like spraying a whole car or something (not this one, don't worry). I got a few runs and patchy bits, good job most of its gonna be covered up, I intend to paint the visible bit of the sill with stonechip paint and some sort of dark grey satin so the finish does not need to be mint at this stage, (fortunately) Anyway I rubbed it down and left it for a few days, during which I got a tin of acrylic basecoat mixed up in the right colour. first coat had a few of those silicone fish eye things: Second coat was better in that regard: most annoyingly, I had a massive patch start reacting and fizzing up like a ba$tard: You f**king b&&&&&d..... Every single time I ever try to paint anything this happens somewhere, its bloody infuriating. Theres nowt for it but to rub it al back, either to bare metal or a smooth surface, barcoat it all and start again. Well i will do that, but later on. Fortunately it did not happen anywhere that I cannot access easily when the doors are back on. For lacquer, i used an aerosol of the stuff which worked well on the Cavalier a while back, put two coats on and it looked champion: Well that looks decent enough at least, even if I have got a bit of a lunar landscape on the rear doorshut. Next I bought a schutz gun thing and some of that Gravitex paint and painted the sill: Final stage will be to paint that with a dark grey overcoat and I can finally rivet on the treadplates and refit the doors. drivers footwell now looks like this BTW: That big packet is some new sound deadening pads to replace the ones i've chiselled off! Now then! Some other news. I clocked an FSO Polonez on eBay a while back and it caught my eye as something I had not seen for yonks. The advert was shockingly poor, check out the photography: It got listed twice and had no bids either time. For once I had made it to the end of the month without running out of money, so i found myself being drawn to it. I got in touch with the seller and arranged to drive down to Bedford to see it. I found the car and thought it looked alright, but when i rang the seller there was no reply!! I could not get in touch with them. What a wasted journey. 'Fugg it' I thought and drove home, £20 in petrol wasted. I sent them a moan through eBAy and they replied sounding reasonably apologetic at least. Anyway about a week after the auction finished I sent them a text asking what the crack was. This time they rang back and sounded a bit more business like. So I went down again and met them. It was being sold by a middle-aged African woman who was into exporting stuff to Nigeria, she had it parked in a yard next to a shipping container full of old computers and general $hite. Her right hand man was a half-italian, half-cockney mental case who did not stop talking for a second, it took him about 2 minutes from meeting me to start showing me pictures of his Filippino 'girlfriends' on his mobile phone, ("she rings me 10 times a day!!") anyway they said I could buy it for £275 so I did. The battery was flat so i couldn't start it or drive it but they reckoned it ran great so i took their word for it, as I liked em both. I took a couple of brave pills and A-framed it home behind the Rover: I was bricking it a bit but it towed home absolutley great, no worried at all and felt very stable. Allow me to introduce THE BO11OGNEZ! Next day I charged up the battery and sure enough, it fired right up and sounds acceptable, which I think is as good as these things ever sound. Its a 1.6 engine and is a 1993 model with a carb and no cat, don't know if that is going to cause any grief when i try to MOT it but we'll see. Might ring up these boys and see if they can call up on their computer the service history: The rear tyres are STOMIL reps: And get a load of the fronts! Thats right trackday dweebs, get your slow-ass outta the way on the chicanes as i am rockin some bad-ass GAJAH TUNGGALS. To be fair this FSO is in pretty decent nick, its only got 29,000 miles on, everything seems to work OK, the body is very tidy - check the straightness! Its even got an 'unbranded' CD player with a USB hole in it. KWALITY! To get it MOT'd I think it needs a set of tyres and some welding on the passenger side sill, other than that it seems to be alright. I've got the polish reg doc so should be able to register it OK, assuming the DVLA put some sort of system in place for doing so before they shut all their offices down, the stupid sh1tes. To be honest i'm pretty happy with it! I realise its a total crock of course, (my Polish neighbour asked WTF did i want with one of these rubbish old things), but I think its got a sort of appeal all its own, I love the oldskool driving experience and I reckon it'll be quite fun to blezz about in, (for a short while at least). Mechanic Kitteh says: TEH STEERING ARE 2 HEAVY 4 KITTEHS LOL!!!11!

WORD 2 YA MUTHA Been doing a bit on the Maser again recently, believe it or not. Lst time I had painted the sills with stonechip stuff... Now I have painted em with some generic dark grey satin finish, and boshed the doors back on. Looks llike this now: Infuriatingly I found a rot hole while I was fitting the drivers door, its on but I will have to take it off again to fettle that. Anyway it looks a bit more like a car again and the floor looks great! Well happy about that. Now it was time to dig into the last big bit of obvious rot on the car, the drivers side front wing. There was a nice big patch riveted in and wobbed over in the classical style, soon ripped that out! Before ripping inot it too much, I had a look to see what use the spare front end was going to be. Cleaned up the wing: Rubbish, that will need looking at thats been patched up once before: Sliced off the front wing, will have to re-make that front edge like on the other side Its all full of wob in the top as well! Next I 'liberated' the headlight panel with careful use of the spot weld drilla: Bit more choppage: Hey thats gonna be 'spot bo11ock on' (as the professionals say) Decided to try and use a big chunk of the inner wing from the spare metalwork, but thought i'd better try to clean it up first, as you can see it had a sort of a 'lesion' where someone had repaired a 1.5" hole with mig weld: chopped that out and welded a little piece in its place: the front end of the inner wing had rotted away quite badly, so i 'reinstated' the metal as best I could: I was about ready to slice the relevant bit of inner wing bit out of the spare front end, so i trimmed up mine so i'd know exactly where to cut: I clamped the sliced off rotten bit on top of my 'new' inner wing and marked around it, you can see how much of the old one had rotted away, pretty much the whole front 4-5 inches or so: TREASURE!!!111! As it turned out i'm getting reasonable VFM from this front end, used quite a lot of it in the end. Started to set it in position: Looked like that from underneath. Its double skinned aloing that bottom edge so i was gonna weld it from both sides so as to get both skins. Before welding it properly, i checked it for fit with the headlight panel and a few clamps: All seemed good so lashed on the weld-thru paint: Welded it on. To be honest thats about where i'm up to, next job is to fix up that outer wing and get it fitted on, then i'm not sure after that.... I want to put as much stuff back on as possible, before starting to think about taking the engine out!!!! We'll see. Thanks for looking, L8RZ T8RZ

ALright gang, time for an update: 1) the ROVER.Recently it was time for this car to have its 3rd MOT in my ownership. I am well chuffed to report that, despite having covered 24,000 miles in a year, it went straight through with only an advisory for 'oil leak' (what a surprise). Great car! I rewarded it by fitting a new cambelt + tensioner: I'd had an inkling that at least some of my leaking oil ws coming from a camshaft seal, sure enough: So, new belt, tensioner and cam seals then! Anyway that went without incident and this car is going great guns, i've done 62,000 miles in it in total, 55,000 on the engine I fitted which already had about 125k on! 180k on a Rover engine!!! It runs and sounds absolutely great as well, can't fault it (apart from the oil leaks). Next: This old jetta briefly joined the gang, it belonged to a Neighbour of forum member lankyTim's family, and he got wind that it was going for scrap! I had previously admired it so he gave me a shout and we managed to save it from the crusher with 24hrs to spare. It was a nice old thing alright, 85k on and unmessed with, only real problem was some manky paintwork on the LH side. I boshed it in for an MOT which it failed on a few bits: A set of discs and pads, new drop links and a new wheel cylinder saw it fit for another 12 months on the road so that was reasonably painless. Hitit up with the polishing mop: And sold it on this forum within 48 hours! Brilliant!!! I didn't make a lot of money on it but covered all my costs plus a few beers and the Jetta lives on so thats a result innit. As for the MASER, i've even done a bit on that too. had to get the LH front wing sorted. I chpped it off the front end and had an inspection: Not great, obviously been 'repaired' a bit in the past. I needed to replace a bit of it that had the swage line pressed in, so had a crack at making a replacement bit: Made the swage line OK, but the patch was too small! Rather than bin it I just added a bit on to make it fit. chop a hole out: clamp in the new bit: Next I made a 'hockey stick' shaped but for the front edge of the wing, didnt take any photos but this is what I ended up with: tried it on: My new inner wing would need a bit of shaping, but not an impossible amount: repaired a little hole in the inner: trimmed up and joggled the old outer wing: Welded on the bumper bracket and lashed on the 'WELD-THRU': Fitting and adjusting the wing: Tested it for fit with the headlamp 'glasses' Maybe not perfect, but tt'll do for me! Its as good/bad as the other side. plenty of red oxide everywhere: final welding: its on! finally, stripped all the paint off ready for some wob, theere was about 6 layers of paint on the wing! Thats both floors and both wing tips fully welded up... that must be 90% of the welding done now. Might even get a bit more in this weekend if i'm lucky..! Bloody hope so, i am getting sick of welding this thing up

That hunk of rust cunningly shaped like a Maserati is starting to look like a Maserati again. Good work! I went back through your thread and saw that you collected the front end from Stuttgart ( you mad sod!) - just round the corner from me here. You could get a nice finish on that thing with a bit of the Lime mortar you mention. I too use such stuff.
Keep up the good work.

YO! Time for a quick update, did a bit this week, staying down the garage till gone midnight on Wednesday! Brilliant innit. Anyway, I started the evening with a helping of delicious fish and chips to give me the strength to go on. Tonights job was to look at getting the engine out: So that I could have a proper look down here at the chassis leg which has been patched up in the past: Started with all the easy pipes and wires obv. Particularly enjoyed this one: Radiator hose temperature sensor! Useful*. I have no idea what this does as it has two separate 'proper' sensors observing the water temp. I'll have to look it up in the wiring diagram I suppose. Its a right old rats nest down the back of the engine, loads of waterpipes, both the turbos are water-cooled so theres plenty of pipes spaghetti-ing all over the shop. To be honest it was pretty straightforward. already had the exhaust pipes off from welding up the floor, disconnected loads of pipes and wires and that and before you kew it the hoist was limbering up: At the first attempt, i got it half-out then had to put it back as I had the angle of dangle all wrong: Ah! Thats better: Its a PROPER tight fit at the back, you have to get the engine at a mega steep angle to get it out, but then it barely squeezes between the steering rack and the bulkhead. I think to put it back i'll probably have to remove or at least loosen the steering rack: Anyway out it came with pretty much no damage due to ham-fistedness: PROPER BO! This is the chassis leg in question: To be fair it looks like a half-decent job in this pic and would probaby pass a test. But I know theres some fairly serious rot inside here and having spent so long on the rest of it I don't wanna leave it in there. SO, next job is to clean this up and investigate it properly. Also got to write a shopping list of bits to get from eurospares (cam cover and sump gaskets, timing belt, steering rack gaiters to start with) before I put it back together. What about that then! Looks even further from hitting the road now! Will probably get a bit of time on it tomorrow though hopefully. Finally if anyone is feeling inspired by this lot, I sugest you wazz right into my face by buying this cracking-looking 425 in the south of france, had loads of work done and very likely to be rot free (guy says its in its original slightly sun-bleached paint), for a grand. Depressing. www.leboncoin.fr/voitures/383153874.htm?ca=15_s L88RZ

Maserati: total admiration, inspiring stuff.
Argenta: hard to express in reasonable terms why I want that classic three-box saloon so much, but I really do! An ambition not helped by catching occasional glimpses of an immaculate Mirafiori in daily use in Bournemouth.

EVENIN' Been doing a bit on the Maser this weekend after several weeks of being distinctly un-ar$ed about the hopeless old crock. TBH I must not have had my mind fully on the job as i made some right schoolboy errors. Anyway I have made a decent bit of progress so on with the GROT PWNAGE! This is the rust that needs sorting. Someone has glued a patch on the chassis leg here, and painted over it with the old black gloop. The rot has spread right through the strut tower thing and into the inner wing. Anyway first job is to get that patch off. Cleaning up to find the welds Started to remove the patches: Here you can see where its all gone manky underneath. The patch was hardly welded on at all at the bulkhead end, I just prised it off with a crowbar and it popped right off. GOOD! You can see theres several layers going on here. Nice eh!!! I think i neet to get that strut tower thing out of the way so I can replace the steel that is the actual inner wing panel, thsts the sort of 'core' of all these layers thats rotted out. Heres the view from the other side: Took the strut off for a proper look. Whoever welded it up last time did not bother to put any paint or anthing on their welds on this side. Nice work! Heres the bottom of the strut tower thing, bubbling up nicely: choppy choppy! Close up of the opened-up chassis leg. welded back on the supa thick reinforcing plate and sprayed on the weld-thru. Started to make a piece to form the inner wing skin. Eventually got that trimmed up and stitched in: Sixing up to refit the bottom of the strut tower pressing. It got a bit battered in the removal! Welded in: After a bit of arsing about it looked like this on the inside: Next I started to make a patch for the inside. Like an idiot I made it too short so seeing as it would have a join I ended up chopping it in half just to make it a bit easier to fit. Starting to weld it in. You can see along the top edge I had not made any plug welding holes! just forgot didnt I, probably thinking about something else. So, I had to chop off the tack welds to fix that. But of course I could not get the grinder in there, so I took the guard off the angle grinder to get right in the corner. Took all of about 2 mins before i sliced my finger: Brilliant innit. Anyway, no serious damage done amazingly so on with the welding. Lashed a bit of WELD-THRU in the box section and weled my patch back on. Immediately there was a massive 'FOOM' noise as the aerosol vapour inside the chassis leg exploded. FFS get a grip bo11ox man. Extended the other half of my original patch and welded it in. Spent ages arsing around filing it and that to get a neat fit. Welded a little 'handle' on it so I could hold it in the right place. Looked like that when I was done. After a clean-up and grind-up I lashed on the seam sealer: Hurrah!!! That is the last SERIOUS bit of welding this car needs (I think). Now i can actually start putting some bits back on! Next job is to clean up and paint the bits of the engine bay that have been welded, so that the engine can go back in!!! AWESOME.

Hey Mr_blownup_imp,
I must say its always very encouraging to get a pat on the back from a premier-league tat fettler such as yourself, many thanks for the kind words. Concerning the turbos, i read that the tiny IHI blowers were originally developed for use on Moto Guzzi motorcycles. As well as Maserati, Alejandro de Tomaso also owned Moto Guzzi at the time so there might be something in that connection, who knows?
