It's been a while since I posted - been a little busy with work the house lately......... Anyway, the weather down here in the South has been curse word for a while and I've noticed the tyres on my Rocco (Toyo's 185/60/14) are pretty curse word in the wet. However, they aren't to bad in the dry. So, can anyone recomend a tyre that is both good in the wet and in the dry? Oh yeah, and I'm still after a set of 15" Passat steels....! Ta

I've heard good stuff about Avons in the wet, also Michelins - my mate has them on his Clio and they stick like, erm, 'chewing gum' to a blanket in the wet - unfortunately they're a bit on the soft side so if you drive hard in the dry they wear quite fast.

Try Kuhmo. I use road legal rally Ectasas on both the Sunbeam and the DSM. Reasonably priced good wear from the harder compounds and good in the wet too.

I need a pair the same size as that for mine! I'm torn between budget constraints which dictate I get the cheapest I can for now, and the fact that they are Pirelli P-Slot wheels and so should really have Pirellis on them...

Toyos do grip very well in the dry but again wear fast becasue of this.
I always have to bite the bullet with tyres and go with the Goodyear Eagle F1s. Can't beat them as far as I can find for all round grip.
Shop around and you can get them for less than £50 per corner as a 195/50/15.
I did have some BF goodridge profiler Gs which were great in the wet. That was back when I had 17s on the golf. Bit cheaper than the Goodyears.

Best I've found for a balance of wet / dry grip and at a sensible price are Marangoni Vanto's. I put a set on the wife's Astra last year and the difference they made was great . Link: www.marangoni.com/content.asp?L=3&IdMen=148I've got Kumho Ecstas on the Beemer which are pretty good, but owing to the width of them, the tread pattern and the general tail-happyness of the car I still find that silly sidewaysness is very easily achievable in damp conditions! ;D

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Looking at the PCD chart, there aren't many 15" 4x100 steels I could get for the Rocco. Been looking at MX5 ones, but they're way out of my price range - any other suggestions? - maybe 16" or 17".......
Don't really want to go for alloys..............

Passat/G60 steelies should still be available brand new from main dealers... usually about £40 each.
I had Hankook's on my old E30 (and my old 16v mk2 too) reasonably cheap, and stuck quite well all round.
The Skoda has Continentals on and they seem ok too.

'So, can anyone recomend a tyre that is both good in the wet and in the dry?(185/60/14) '
Hello everybody, thought i'd put my tupence worth in.
Have you thought of YOKOHAMA '306', good allrounder in 185/60 R14, don't recon so much for '539', better as a summer only tyre. Been running Yokohama for over 10 years now on my cars (improved the handling of my MGBGT no end and won't fit anything else to my Toyotas) and well pleased and don't seam to wear out quick like some people claim. Trouble is this year may be last year that Yokohama are brilliant, because I believe they have been bought out by some budget tyre manufacturer.
Goodyear NCT'S are also very good (were great on an Escort of mine).

I have yoko A539 on mine. Great in the dry and very scary in the wet ! I believe the A032R's are much better. Best dry/wet comination that everyone raves about has got to be the F1's. But, for us retro blokes , I believe they do not do 14's Toyo proxies are very good also, but dunno if available in 14's

Pirellis aren't bad, I've had Imps with them in the past, albeit on 13" Wellers, and I was pretty impressed by the Yokohamas I had on an Imp a couple of years back. (I'm using some pretty nondescript stuff at the moment because I couldn't get any good quality 185/60 R13s for a decent price anywhere, but even then the Ceats that I'm using at the moment are actually quite good considereing they didn't cost the earth)

iRocco: You said you were looking for other 'ideas' with regard to steel wheels that were 4x100... Toyota- Corolla, Starlet, Paseo and Yaris and pre 1990 MR2's are all 4X100
