The car is getting on nice, i want a 24v in my rekord! Looking forward to seeing the finished machine
They are a strong engine and relatively easy to get nearly 250 bhp out of it - they do have an achilies heel the simplex camchain but heavy duty sets are out there...... * Checks drawer yep definately 11 sets left
Hi BC, thought you'd like to see these shots I unearthed of a Monza 24v conversion. About 1996 I reckon, when a Vauxhall/Opel show was held at Billing same weekend as the JAE.
BTW, is that a Diplomat behind it? Damn, why didn't take a piccy of that

I was there and had a good look at that car - haven't seen it since mind - from memory i think it was Derek Hunts car but can't be 100% sure

24V Header tank in correct place - Check 24V Washer bottle in correct place - Check Monza Radiator modified correctly - Check ABS Modulator unit turned thro 90 deg - Check
Didn't like
the 24V PAS header tank position - bit low and too far forward
the 12V airbox with a 24V AFM - 25% restriction on air if you do that
and from memory the fuel line routes were a bit of a bodge
But it is one of the better conversions I've looked at over the years ;D

I remember you mentined in a thread awhile ago about resetting the spring in the afm. Just wondering how you do that?
Tools required
1. paint stick/tipex/nail varnish (not clear!!) 2. Small Flat head screwdriver (to hold the spring clip) 3. Med Flat head screwdriver (to inch the toothed wheel) 4. large Flat head screwdriver (to prise the lid)
NO OTHER TOOLS REQUIRED
Instructions
- Lift off the black stuck down cover on the AFM
(if it's never come off before be carefull it's well stuck down, if it comes of easily be suspicious someonelse has had their fingers in it)
- look very carefully inside
- Clean the carbon track with a bit of meths on a cotton bud
(don't be agressive - light wipe/rub or you will take the track surface off.)
- look at the way the spring is coiled
- Mark the teeth with a blob of paint where the clip holds the outer toothed wheel
(so you can go back to teh original settings if you get it wrong)
- using two screwdrivers one to inch the toothed wheel in the direction to increase or decrease spring tension and the other to lightly hold the locking tang away from the teeth as you do it
(you will see there is a post besides the toothed wheel moulded into the casting just for this purpose)
Increasing tension leans the mixture
Decreasing tension richens the mixture
Why adjust at all and what are you trying to achieve?
Well the coiled spring ages and loses some of it's springyness and as a result the AFM flap opens further for a given air pressure - the ECU takes this reading and supplies fuel acordingly (too much fuel) and performance and economy suffer......
How do I know I've got it right
Trip computer on a Monza is a big clue
Normlly reads 0.4 gal per hr on hot tickover
Adjust to read 0.3 gal per hour on hot tickover - any less and the car will run badly and you've gone too far
At cruise under light load maintaining a steady 60 on the flat trip comp should average 34-36 mpg
so thats the aim when you go for a drive
Normally 3-4 clicks on the AFM if it hasn't been touched before and hasn't done a zillion miles is perfect
but I allways do it a click at a time and go for a drive to see if it's better
(when there is no change to consumption or performance you have gone too far and back off 2 clicks one to restore it to previou best setting and one for a tad more fuel for safety ;D)
I guess this thread really needs a picture or two
PS no liability accepted for anything
-If you feel you need to get an 8mm socket or spanner out to adjust the AFM - please glue the cover back on and leave well alone............
The last idiot that did that despite instructions to the contrary resulted in a 1hr phone call at my expense to fix/correct the problem step by step and the curse word still slagged me off in the club for giving duff advice - tosser!!!!

I have to admit publicly this is killing me - I don't get it back till Friday but i went to see how the cage was coming on today - don't laugh - no pics cos dozy forgot the camera!!!
Anyway the main side hoops are in so progress is being made
I've tidied the garage Sorted all me tools Planned the Senny resto project and set some timelines Cleaned the Senny and the LC Jet washed the drive - empty!!! never seen it like that!!!
I want it back and I don't get it back till Friday!!! Still it's Thursday now right?
Just got these photo's thro the post on a CD from John Lakey ABS member who came to pick up some Monza bits that were surplus....
This was my Thursday all night session to finish the Monza off enought to get her to the powerflow place under it's own steam
thought you might like to see pictures of people for a change ;D
Adrian (ABS member, Monza owner and electrics "God") adding some lubricant (I thieved the fairy from the kitchen) cos the old hose was bit tight on the new PAS reservoir - well thats what he claimed
Obviously worked
Cos we had to drill a hole to bolt it to the inner wing (right angle drills are sooo usefull)
Clearsy (parts manager for my local vauxhall dealer and all round good egg - manta owner/restoration in progress) dropped by with some last minute bits - well that was his excuse - he didn't get his hands dirty tho
I tried that battery in all ways round and one or other lead was stretched as a result - answer - move the earth lead
Fuel pipe clearance checks after Andy said "Fark me thats close"
Me: It will go through - it came out that way
Adrian: you silly sod I bet you took it out after the rad wasn't there
My chassis must be fairly stiff as the doors open and close pretty much okay no matter where its jacked up. Worst car I had was my first MG maestro impossible to open the passenger doors when it was jacked up. Fitted a rear strut brace and then it was fine.
Nice one. I was curious to see how it would join the front strut tops, but it looks pretty good. My real concern about the setup is teh harness location, I think it would be a lot safer if you could mount the rear straps close to horizontal to the harness slots in the seats.

Thats a bit that still has to be done

Still needs
1. A removable cross brace between the rear turret mounting for the main cage
2. A permentant brace accross the front section where it meet the turrets
3. A second bar across the centre uprights to mount the harnesses too
First Track day of the year was yesterday - I had a "great" day
Solved a couple of problems
- Brakes are now perfect (ABS works again - and it was a bit rearward biased but not now)
- Almost got the suspensions setting right (couple more sessions and I would have been at a happy medium)
- PAS Pump stopped screaming and ejecting fluid once the steering box was bled (didn't show up on road usage but was instantly apparent on the track once it got hot)
However halfway through a session it went from sweet and screaming to rough and rattling - Removing manifold & rocker cover revealled everything was apparently fine at the top end - initial suspects were a broken valve spring.
It's silent when cold but definately rattles when hot.
It's either
- lunched a big end shell - Cracked a conrod Cap (some did have a lot of material removed to balance them - Snapped a conrod bolt
Either way engines gotta come out for some rectification work
But - It's home now - AA recovery story is a whole different tale in itself
Striped and caged Monza dead at roadside - Check Four Spare wheels and tyres in boot - Check Helmet - Check Tools - Check 25L Jerry can of Fuel - Check Taped Headlights - Check
Hmmm not exactly you average breakdown then
Oil is a lovely golden "metalic" brown - in fact it's exactly the same colour as a Ford Zephyr my dad owned!!!!!!
glad its going well mate, shame about the engine probs and AA mission
Id change those harness mountings, i had a LONG conversation with Willans before i did mine and i think they are supposed to be at a maximum of 25 degrees from horizontal. Its something like that, i would call them and ask. At the angle you have they are going to pulling right down through those holes in the seats in the event of an accident.
If you've a couple of bits still to do on the cage i would recommend a diagonal on the roof section too, that adds a whole load of extra strength to the cage.

It was always a possibilty - after all it didn't get much time to bed it in due to a date with a rolling road.

Agreed - it was one of the 3 bars that was left out in order to get the car back in time for the track day I had booked. Once all three are in I can get on with a big tidy up and all the cosmetics that go with that - re-fitting a dash somehow being a big priority

Kinda ruled out due to a sunroof being there - I guess there are always going to be compromises in any car
Thats not good, but at least you got chance to enjoy it for awhile before it all went Pete Tong.
Oh yes and it was seriously good fun - few more sessions and I'd have the suspension settings right (well for Marham anyway - back later this year so I reckon in the first couple of sessions I'd have it sussed)

When you taking the engine out?
Started tonight but only all the wiring and loosening bolts cos I was late home from work
Should have it out tommorrow night with a bit of luck
I love it when a plan comes together. Looks fantastic mate.
All we need now is some action shots.
Should get them next week so I'll post em up when they arrive
I should warn you it will look a bit one eyed in the pics -didn't get chance to box in the K&N so in order to ensure a constant feed of cold air - took the headlight and indicator out ;D
