I agree that RR should keep on topic and that we shouldn't be chatting about the weather and gossiping about wether Hilda over the road has washed her curtains this year. However...I'd like to just point out that I got a little outraged at how vrskodanormans "outraged" thread was dealt with today. I don't want to cause an arguement, and I continue to love this place as much as ever, but I'm going to express my opinion. His topic was about motoring. This is a motoring forum. Rob, quite rightly is annoyed about a drink-driver. and I believe he was correct in posting his thread on here to highlight the subject. The driver is the most dangerous "componenent" of any car, wether new or retro, a dodgy one is far more dangerous than a rotten sill or a faulty pretty much anything else in a car! So there! Rant over, delete if you want! No hard feelings ect!

It took a bit of a while for me to understand the way this forum ticks but eventually I got it. Bottom line It's about Retro CARS not motoring in general If it's your car thats the subject of the topic - fair post If it's what you read in the paper, saw on the news, heard on the radio read on the web and it's car related doesn't mean it's a fair post here. There are hundreds of forums out there diluted by chit chat and topical commentry Post there You've just joined one that's riddled with it I'm on it too but I don't spend a lot of time on there..........

I was going to just delete the thread... I'll do that in future rather than locking threads... its what I always used to do,.. but some people started getting upset when their totally off topic threads were deleted... Threads about criminals, drunk drivers, little baby children, blah blah blah always turn out very bad... Is it an old car? Is it modified? Then its a sure fire winner, if its not, then there is the possibility it'll get locked or deleted. Don't like that? Go here and see what happens when non-car stuff is the order of the day... If you want that from a forum there are places for it,.. just not here.

That is a horrendous forum, but in fairness I doubt any of the cool people on here would resort to that degree of crapness!

But it's a slippery slope and once a forum allows itself down that road it becomes acceptable to all and the number of posts like it increase.... This is one of the only forums I know that hasn't descended into the "topical debate" pit. Tactfull moderation and peer pressure ;D Never found it chilly on here either

Have to agree with Hotwire here. I enjoy a few forums where off-topic discussions are held - hell, the 2CV one ALWAYS drifts off topic.
But, it is all too easy for off topic discussions to degenerate into slagging matches. There is a lot of stuff going on in the world that people feel VERY strongly about and it is safer to keep it retro here - especially given the amount of traffic this site has. We're not exactly twiddling our thumbs waiting for someone to say something are we?!
I have seen too many forums fall apart because of issues they were nothing to do with. Keep it Retro! Save your vitriol for elsewhere.

Perhaps this could be posted at the top of the General Page, that way anyone posting OT threads can't be curse word off if their threads are deleted?

I've often thought that there needs to be some sort of statement letting new members know that we don't bother with OT stuff - OK, it's called Retro-Rides, the Forum sections are clearly labelled etc etc, but I dare say that's the case with other forums, but OT stuff is the norm. Someone coming over from another forum and talking about their cat preferring Felix to Whiskas because it's the done thing on other forums they post on might take it the wrong way when more seasoned RR members start boshing up pics of Cedrics / T3 turbochargers etc... I think sometimes it might come across as unfriendly because new members don't know the "unwritten rule" [/Ned Flanders mode] ;D

Sticking rules posts on forums doesn't help... a lot of people ignore the one at the top of the Readers Rides section for a start.
Its a simple case of manners, you come on to a new forum and see what its like before you start posting, you don't just better you way in and post up something about your cat or whatever. There are no "rules" for the forum, there are just manners. If you go somewhere and everyone is talking about knitting don't be suprised if when you try to start talking about sticking bike carbs on your a-series engine they either ignore you or tell you to talk about knitting.

Would it be so dificult to put up a one line notice that off topic threads will be deleted?

We do,.. in off topic threads.. then they get locked so they hang about on the board for a week or so before vanishing into the ether..
Its not really a massive problem though,..
Its when long term members start posting off topic things, then thats an issue...
