One day off. The tools assembled, help from Rmad. Stock ride height I'm not happy at all at being able to get a fist in there! All the tools assembled, no jokes please! 'Clamps' please Dr Mad Nicely clamped and part ground Sparks everywhere The surplus bits, we'll sell those as 'Gothic Chav' hoops down the market Then, it snowed! We stood back to look at this point, and decided it needed lowering! Some more came off. Then, before we could do the back, it snowed really hard. The backs are easy so will get done at the weekend. The clamps were fantastic, under £25 including postage and about as safe as they could be. There's 3 clamps, each hook has a gripping hook as well to clamp onto the spring to stop the whole thing moving around the coils.

Blimey...do I really look like that? What a pleb! For those that hadn't worked it out from Wagoneer's post above...we did the front twice, the first was a test chop..which looked 'lower than standard' but not actually 'lowered'....and a second chop which is somewhere between 'lowered' and 'slammed' but is, in reality, 'as low as it's gonna go without spending a wagon load of cash'. Well done Wagoneer...now go and do the back....what do you mean it's snowing? ;D

excellent work! Might be a nice article for the features section?
Do you have to taper the ends of the springs? - I heard this improves the low speed ride a little. We're going to be doing the sunny in the next couple of weeks...when/if it warms up a bit.

excellent work! Might be a nice article for the features section? Spring chopping (the Rmad way) is not something you should encourage. Yes, you do...at which point I remind you that: Spring chopping (the Rmad way) is not something you should encourage. DarrenW...3.coils in the end.

3 coils eh! ;D
So, err, what's the ride like now then?

3 coils was about half of the entire spring. The new ride is firm but not any harsher than stock! I need to replace the strut inserts anyway so will go for uprated ones. I've also replaced most of the rubbery bits on the front as well which really helps.
As a safety precaution, the coils will be wired or welded to the retaining cups at the top when I change the inserts.
No idea why the pictures don't work. I'll look into it.
Rmad, thanks hugely for your assistance and encouragement!

I just cannot reconcile the idea of chopping springs to bits with an angle grinder.
Do we know any suppliers of custom-made lowering springs? What sort of money do they cost?

I just cannot reconcile the idea of chopping springs to bits with an angle grinder. Do we know any suppliers of custom-made lowering springs? What sort of money do they cost? Both PI and Spax do lowering springs for most of the Volvo range anywhere from £60 upwards, but the drop is only a measly 40mm. Aside from that coilovers are the next step and they start at £250 +. I agree chopping the original may seem harsh but often its the only option left for the desired affect. And as long as done safe, left suitably to pass an mot and your insurer informed then all should be ok. J

Retro cars had one once! That had the spax coilovers iirc.
They stripped it too. Get the rims that car had, the 5 spokes!

Thanks! I don't know why we didn't just get on with the back, it was only snowing after all. I once learnt to weld by patching Manta sills in the snow so grinding springs is easy!
I need to buy a new welder to get all the trim 'oles done. It's my birthday today so I'm hopeful for some assistance with the cost!
I'm sticking with the steels at the moment, just painting them up. With 2 children, wife and mortgage, the Volvo is bottom of the list for spending! Plus the wife wants a new people carrier! Help!!

wants a new people carrier when theres a 240 parked outside?! The 240 has got to be one of the safest cars made in the last 20 years! Not to mention you could fit half the British army in it.
