So the radio news has been burbling on this afternoon about the price of second hand motors crashing this year due to the credit crunch. All this doom and gloom will (apparently) mean that people can't get the dough for cars or will need there money for other things. I expect that those semi old luxo barges will be worst hit so it looks like 2008 may be the year to hoover up some big bim or merc lovelyness. oh yes!

I would have thought a credit crunch would result in an increase in the value of old bangers as nobody can afford newer stuff and will want to buy outright instead of getting credit e.t.c
Not that I'm an economist or anything.

I did think that too but those on the radio thought otherwise.

Well, what its going to do, is make money a bit tighter for anyone with a adjustable rate mortgage, but the people who will be in the most trouble are people with loads of credit card debt, who will see the rates go up.
The main thing is it will be harder to borrow money. So the "3 year old vauxhall, easy terms" kind of car is going to get cheaper. People are going to tend to keep the car they have got for longer, to keep down the amount of money they have borrowed.
The stuff just about cheap enough to buy with cash, which is also cheap to run, may go up in price a bit. Well, not go up.. but stop depreciating maybe.
Anything pre 1990, the average consumer wouldn't even consider as an alternative to that 3 year old vauxhall on easy credit. So I can't see it having much of an effect on us.

Loved the girl on Radio 1 - "I bought my car for 7k, by the time I've finished paying the finance it will be 11k, and when I sell it I'll only get 3-4k, it's rubbish"
Well buy a frigging car you can afford you daft mare and stay away from 'competitive' 30% APR.

2nd hand car prices going down?
good news i say - for retro rides members it will can only be good - as only the ticky end of the car market is going to suffer
i don't have a mortgage, or any debts at all - so i can laugh at my neighbours who seem to snigger at my 26 year old dailydriver while they drive around in something they don't own outright, and cant afford the re-payments for
mine will be the only car in the street to increase in value over the coming years

Yep, maybe top line expensive, big engined cars will suffer but then again they always have. Low rent stuff (sub five hundred quiders) will always be in demand and I can't see that changine for a long long while. Monty, spot on post mate: I reckon it's all down to the credit culture and dippy bints/spotty yoofs wanting the newest shape Corsa/Saxo/whatever to look the part. Why don't they do what (probably) most of us did and start out with something sh1te to build up their no claims and keep upgrading as they go along? It's also another reason these kids won't grow up to 'get' older cars like what we do.

On a slightly different note - I wonder if the recentish changes in the tax system where things are measured via an official CO2 figure (or however they do it) for road tax and/or congestion charging effect prices. Will a pre-emissions figures Range Rover be worth more than one a year younger? Might people be deliberately buying older cars for tax savings?

I do feel sorry for those with lots of debt. Wasn't too long ago that I was in a mess myself. It's just soooo easy to sign your life away and you don't realise there's a problem until it's way too late. They really need to teach you the importance of money at school, that would be a darn sight more useful than Trigonometry! I saw the light though - old cars are the future! Goodbye modern cars that are worth a pittance compared to what you end up paying for them! Goodbye depreciation! Goodbye main dealer servicing! Ah, ain't life grand? And with that, I've dragged the discussion onto Retros!

I don't think I am alone in already having done that about a year ago - looking for a big saloon (daily smoker) prefered age was no newer than 2000 - you could see that once an emisions based VED system was in place the higher groups were ripe for hammering

I can smile nicely at the cant you afford a better car peeps cos I own it (and the house I live in) outright. I have no debt at all (unless u count the £1000 council tax bill that just landed- thats gonna be another 10 month repayments then. PS having no debt doesnt make you rich. It just helps me not be as poor as everyone else (buy-as-you-view? or get-it-off-freecycle?) Back to the topic, Due to the crazy price of scrap metal, I can make £300 minimum from any medium/large car with alloys and a catylist, so £100 N reg mondeos and the like are bargains to me.

Remember a car built in 2000 is already 8 years old.. It is depreciating like a stone, even though it has already fallen a long long way. The difference between a 2000 and a 2001 model is never going to be huge. Both of them are going to be cheap bangers. It is just more likely the 2001 model will end up scrapped for fiscal reasons, whilst the 2000 model will soldier on for longer, in the hands of someone who knows their banger-nomics.

the key is separation. engine and box are foundry alloy (irony ally) £350/tonne and rising Alloy wheels are £1000/tonne and if the tyres are good the local recon tyre place gives £15 each for 15" tyres. Catalyst is £50 on its own, and the rest is frag feed at £135 per tonne. Its a fiver in diesel to drive to blaydon tho.

Remember a car built in 2000 is already 8 years old.. It is depreciating like a stone, even though it has already fallen a long long way. £65,000 worth of fall makes me smile - it's only gonna do that once ;D The difference between a 2000 and a 2001 model is never going to be huge. Both of them are going to be cheap bangers. It is just more likely the 2001 model will end up scrapped for fiscal reasons, whilst the 2000 model will soldier on for longer, in the hands of someone who knows their banger-nomics. But the earlier (just) cars will definately have a marketing advantage - my money is on ebay listings mentioning the lower VED advantages
