Do tyres harden with age ?
My suspicion is that they do - maybe to do with constant heating & cooling - not sure tho.
I know my bike tyres crack up when left in the sun all year. but not the case with car tyres.
could be good tho - harden & therfore give longer like. Although loose grip as well !!!!!!
I fitted a set of tires that had not been used for about 6 years - they seem a tad hard & a little skittish in the wet.

UV light causes them to harden, so keep them out of the sun!

Definitely, I had a set of 7yr old tyres on our Beetle when we bought it, stored in a garage, tyres rotated regularly, we fitted new ones all round and the car was transformed ;D

UV is certainly one agent of destruction, though the carbon black is used to combat that.
Another enemy of rubber is ozone from electric motors. Bag your tires when not in use and store them away from furnace handlers and laundry driers!

You can buy some stuff that you paint on them and it softens them up again. my mate used to use it on his slicks after they'd been in the garage all winter. I cant remember what its called but demon tweeks sell it.

you are supposed to replace rubber every 7 years regardless of wear as the rubber stiffens and weakens and cracks up.

sod tyre softener. Once a tyre starts to perish I'd be scared of it disintigrating. The skyline ones are on the way out, cracks in the tread but nothing in the walls yet. Good job i'm getting a new set of wheels and tyres soon!

Since you've got a Skyline + tyres you no longer care for... there's only ONE possible way to dispose of said tyres I believe.

Oh yes and if your really lucky the carcass can go as well, giving you a lovely square tyre! Old Pirellis used to be favourite, especially the rear on FWD stuff. distort long before they wear out. Got some really nice Colway remoulds that were on the Opel when I got it. I don't think the tread dropped all the years I used them

All four tyres on our Mini started bulging and cracking like you wouldn't believe. Replaced the lot. Not a lot of expense for peace of mind.
Tyre aging is an oft-forgotten issue. It isn't just a case of tread depth and pressure.

Didnt some old boy get killed in his MGB when he took it down the motorway and a "new old stock" rear tyre blew out? I wasnt too bothered about cracked tyre walls before but I am now!

Yup, the tyres turned out to be over 20 years old! Makes me sick to think of myself doing 80mph in my P6B - complete with bulging sidewalls...

do you think products put on to rubber like all these waxing agents can be detrimental? or is it just use/lack of use?

I've got some wheels and tyres on the T3, just to keep it off the floor. Have no intention of using said tyres on the road since they appear to be older than me... they're radials, but they're the old 165R15 type, not 165/65R15. The sidewalls have massive cracks in and they have flatspots where they've stood for two years or more, semi-inflated. When inflaed properly, the flatspots remain!

do you think products put on to rubber like all these waxing agents can be detrimental? or is it just use/lack of use? the rubber int he tyres breaks down due to a photosensitive reaction with sunlight. They basically just rot like a vampire, but slower.
