Given it was still a quite large, wide & heavy car in spite of its styling, it's just as well the rotary engine didn't happen, nor the proposed VW engines. I cannot recall the proportions of the one I saw at Wheels day a few years ago, but suspect it was deceptively wide, like my Astro van, and not having a 4 dead men sized trunk changed the look a load. akku thank you for adding your knowledge and insights, I am learning stuff here on top of the bit that I knew.

The problem with the Gremlin was being a bit of a rush job to counter the imports they basically chopped the back half off a Hornet mid sized (in American terms) saloon. So they had to use the existing straight six and V8 engines with the long bonnet to match which meant a very inefficient use of space for a small car. I've imagined what if AMC had used a 4 cylinder instead. The bonnet could have been shorter, the screen and front seats moved forward and therefore more room in the back of the car. compared to the original

Great illustration @rathcart. In South Africa these were sold as a Rambler, by Chrysler. I always loved them, especially the brown metallic colour. The flared arches and also in SA they had a specific hubcap that today will be just ugleee, but I loved it.

I just remembered this Nash Metropolitan Gasser project I photographed in 2014. The builder moved on to another car after this so I don't know if he still has it or if it's made any progress but I'd love to see it finished. That then led me down a rabbit hole of Metro " gassers" and similar.* *Technically speaking none of these would be allowed to run in the Gas classes back in the day because they were shorter than the minimum wheelbase, though the first one has a H/G lettering on the screen so there must have been a loophole somewhere. Then taking the concept as far as it will go-

Big heavy rotary engine car of the 1970s - Mazda Roadpacer.... Epic success.... yeah in light of everything, the conventional drivetrain was probably FTW.

Knew this looked familiar, it appeared in a marketplace browse link Sadly not much progress from your previous pic. The ad is old too, so may or may not have sold...

Its taken me a while to get "into" the Gremlin's proportions but I kinda dig its weirdass looks. Truncated sedan look way before the BMW 3 series Compact! Theres one on eBay RN which is the UBER RARE ultra base model which came without carpets, opening rear hatch or even a rear seat! www.ebay.co.uk/itm/195970972814I love it!

Always thought that the Hornet used in the Bond movie was a cute well-balanced design (and fairly small, too) for a US car maker. Kind of wanted one ever since, I understand they're not exactly plentiful. And if it's film starring roles you're after, Reese and Sarah steal a Gremlin from outside the Police Station in The Terminator. It too is green like the Hemi Gremmi!
