My X350 XJR was really quick. With the cats having lost their newness and the back boxes removed it sounded evil, too. It was supposed to be around 420bhp with a few intake mods and they're not as heavy as you'd expect, being of aluminium construction. Even with coilovers it was all in at under £2500. Really nice thing to daily. *edit for pictorial evidence of its magnificence* I didn’t know you could buy them that cheap. I’ll definately have to get one at some point. Great buy 👍

I owned a cl500 for the last couple months.
Half your budget, stupid quick, and look good.. lose the back boxes too and they sound epic.

I'd buy an EP3 and be done with it. It's not the outright fastest, but they're bloody good fun.

If it’s for proper pure driving fun, for me it has to be something light, revvy, powerful enough but not too powerful. Seen folk mention AMG’s and Jags, but my CLS 55 AMG, albeit hugely fast, not far away from 600BHP with the mods, it’s fantastic....... but it’s almost too competent if that makes sense, too fast, too refined, too big, too heavy, it takes away some of the buzz. Not to mention the 10-20 MPG, no matter how you drive it lol..... if that sort of thing matters to you. I feel myself craving something like a Megane RS, Type R, Golf R etc maybe even Fiesta ST when time comes to move it on or tuck it away and pamper it a bit.

My brother had a Focus St225, he stored that while doing some work on it and bought an Audi S5, which was more powerful, and while being faster, felt dull as dishwater. Great car to power around in but not a fun car. He sold that and put the money into his ST, and bought a Capri for retro housing.

Well..... I'd blow the whole budget on one of these..... VW Corrado VR6...in this exact colour. I've owned a G60 in Aqua Blue with full black leather for the last 20 years.....but wish that I'd bought the VR6. Even today they're a good all rounder. I'd happily use one as a daily driver and have lots fun while doing so.

I had a modified imprezza about 6 years ago. I've never been in another car that was as exciting. I'd go for a modified golf gti with the ko4 turbo. Your Impreza comment is why I'm struggling! last ride in mine tonight and I love them, not even sure why I sold it really (other than my self confessed 'issues' with car buying/selling)

I think you've captured what I mean Neil, I still want the rawness to the drive and the Scoobys certainly give you that, I fear if I get something like a Jag, big barge Merc they'll feel exactly that, fast but effortlessly fast rather than 'god that hurts my back to drive like that' fast haha

Again, captured perfectly, whilst some of the cars mentioned are 'fast' i fear they'd be dull as dishwater due to all their amazing capabilities and specs

It's nowhere near as quick as my imprezza but I can drive it much much harder as the fun is all in the handling. I could never get out of 3rd in the imprezza when nailing it due to how fast I'd be going. And I enjoy the golf more because of it's ability to be fun at lower speeds. The imprezza was like a drug, I could never get enough of kicking it's head in. I've never grown up even though I've tried. If you enjoy the imprezza, keep it. I keep looking at the evo 10. What's the spec of your car?

And, I also have a car selling/buying problem. Not bought or sold one for 10 months. One day at a time .

It was a messed with WRX so there's plenty faster but it scared me which made it fun. Evo's are one I've never been in a finacially justifiable position to buy and now they've just gone crazy.......did see an Evo 2 which I love the older style ones even more but its got a foobar engine

I had a mi16 205 about 6 years ago. That chassis had all the power it could handle, a perfect combo.

Like I say go for a ko4 vag, a remap plus some uprated brakes and suspension and you'll be happy.
You might not win every race but you'll enjoy going for a blast in it.
I test drove two e46 m3 and they were so boring after the imprezza. Try a civic type r, you have to keep the revs up to get the most out of them. Not that fast but lots of noise when the vtech kicks in.

I found the build quality of these too poor to pay for. For the same money a vag feels much better made.

I think you'll end up back in Impreza ownership in time. They really are a hard car to live without once you've owned a couple. Very, very hard to find something that ticks all the same boxes for even a similar price. I still have a hankering for another even now.

I found the build quality of these too poor to pay for. For the same money a vag feels much better made. Oh, I don't doubt that a VAG feels better made but you have to consider whether you want an extremely comfortable and well appointed car that goes like sh*t off a shovel or something that is more raw. I've got a Skoda VRS challenge it is is silly fast BUT it doesn't involve me in the process of going from A to B quickly. I have genuinely had more fun trying to wring every extra drop out of a smaller car with a smaller engine, my Skoda is just way more capable than I am, and that goes for so many cars now, like the Audis and BMWs that can hit 60 in under 5 seconds. It almost becomes 'so what? They lack involvement. I see where the O.P is coming from. My VRS is the quickest car I have owned and, yes, it is brilliant, bang for bucks there isn't too much else out there to match it BUT it is too capable to be fun to drive fast, it never feels like you are at the limit, never talks back to you that it is giving you everything that it has to give. Fast and build quality doesn't always equate to fun, sometimes the car with the paper thin panels and hard plastic dashboards, powered by asthmatic 4 pots are the cars that give you the biggest feed back and the biggest fun. Just my opinion.
