Yeah, I was really disappointed, particularly since we were trying to attend in a rarer model mini too. Still, it's been sold now, to someone who lives down that way, so maybe it'll get to attend anyway, just not with us 🙁 Part of it was because I didn't want to take a nearly 60 year old mini halfway round the M25, but apparently it couldn't arrive on a trailer? Thats always been the case, all show cars must complete the run. Yeah I know, we wanted to complete the run, but trailer the car to the start, and collect it at the end., But weren't allowed

I have done London to Brighton a few times (99, 05, 09 I think) twice I did the run which is mandatory for concours entrants. We had such fun lost round London at 6am in a concours 850cc mk1. I was in the same mini club for over 10 years and we (me and the wife) met some good people but as described in previous posts there were members who did work on cars for others which was of questionable quality and people who did bunks due to debts leaving there partners to face the music with the bailiffs, bed hopping etc etc. The screw counters came later as the values started to rise but even though I have still got a couple of minis I have not been involved for over 10 years. Would I change anything? No. Would I go back to being involved like we were? No. I think if your a good judge of character you can keep away from the people not worth bothering with and still get something from the whole experience. I was also in the RS owners club for 10 years and there is alot more bragging going on there of look what I have and isn't it the best or people wanting to show how wealthy they are or how much debt they are in. The screw counters are on another level of boring as well. Again I met some good people in that club. The values of the cars have imo pushed the real enthusiasts out of the scene to large degree.

Yeah I know, we wanted to complete the run, but trailer the car to the start, and collect it at the end., But weren't allowed The mistake you made there was asking. Trailering was always largely frowned upon in the mini scene but it went on and people were caught loading cars up round the corner from shows etc. I knew a guy who lived on the route from L2B and he would go to Crystal Palace in his daily mini and swap to the concours one on route. Others have parked outside the park and walked in to register then start off before the run to avoid the mayhem. Good luck to anyone who trailers, it is still hard work. I have tried it and it took the fun out of it but there is no shame in loosing to a trailered car but it is sure nice to beat a trailered car with something you have driven to the show in. I managed it a couple of times in the Rsoc.

Yeah I guess so, but this was not long after that poor sod in the vintage l2b strayed onto the M23, and paid for it with his life! We only wanted a support car, we were happy to do the main run in the mini, and weren't looking for trophies or anything.

I was never bothered about doing the mini L2B, I didn't see the point of paying all that money to use roads I use every day of the week to park in a place that I'd been to countless times. But the night before the event sometime late 90s (I've got the tshirt somewhere) there was a knock at my door. A couple had seen my mini outside and asked if it was mine. Yes. Their mini had broken down the night before, would I like some free tickets. Yes. Excellent example of being in a scene, and the run was pretty good too. Didn't do my clutch much good in the que into Brighton tho.

I always buy a car based on the car, not the community or crowd it attracts.
Now I have a TVR and on purchasing (as you expect) needed some technical hints. I went to the usual forum most would and promptly left. If you want to know about clique social groups, buy a TVR.
Strangely, there is also a contingent within the scene who are not into the concours clique. Its a common theme I see in this thread. If you like the car for what it is to you, there will be someone out there who shares the interest. It just may not be on the common owners clubs though.
This is a great platform for similar minded enthusiasts, and the lack of car specific orientation goes to help that. I think that's also one of the prime reason why its succeeding against farcebook as well. Its just a better online community.

Not really a scene car, but when I got my Astra 13 years ago, it seemed like there was GSi owners, and all other Astras were inferior. I got curse word for Gsi kitting it (I was 18 and wanted it to look better, but couldn't afford to insure a curse word engine). Times have changed and now its apparently cool in its own right, but that is mainly how I found this forum, there wasn't any one up manship here. astras are in their own little anti-scene, suffering from a severe case of "not an escort or golf"

In Club GTi there were some great guys, but also some real anoraks who would go out of their way to stalk and intimidate people. One extreme nerd who for a time was king of the forum, really needed some therapy, or a girlfriend or probably both
But many were spectacularly helpful and knowledgeable and many a laugh was had at Mallory and Donnington

Not sure if the MX5 counts as a "scene" car but the FB group MX5Nutz is just a plain weird place. Admin who would appear to insta-ban people over the smallest indiscretion and really had a weird power thing going on. There also seems to be a culture around MX5's where people seem to do stuff to their cars with the sole intention of trying to get as much negative attention as possible, it's really weird. I guess it's the whole Instagram generation maybe? Build cars for internet points rather than just enjoying them for yourself.
I wasn't in love with the MX5's in the first place but that whole group really turned me off them.
