Fiesta MK3/MK4 - prices of MK3 are climbing and it would be hard to find a decent one below £1k. What about a MK4? Cheap to buy and the zetec engines are great (1.25/1.4). Sadly, rust in the back wheel arches would be the killer here. I can't comment on what they're like to work on, but its a Ford so how hard can it be?! However my mother did have a Mk5 1.25 for a while and although it was pretty rusty it was really fun to drive. I took it down to my then Girlfriends once which involved about 60 miles of B roads through Shropshire and Herefordshire at night. It was brilliant. You could really chuck it about and the little 1.25 engine was really revvy. Sadly the rot killed it. Qwerty, I can imagine. MK4 has the same engine but more retro charm. Really easy to work on, great for someone starting out on the spanners

Had mk1 and mk2 Golfs and many other VW's along the way but to get a good one your talking silly money so I would defo go for the lupo , I had 1.7 SDI and was awesome easy to work on parts everywhere and will always put a smile on your face ,

I've always likes the Ignis, but I think Suzuki aren't the cheapest for parts

As people have said you can't go wrong with 106 or maybe a Saxo which is pretty much same car but cheaper. Easy to work on I've swapped loads of Saxo running gear onto a AX with little more than a engine hoist and Halfords socket set.
Buying wise I'd be buying on condition of bodywork and rust everything else is available cheap. There's loads of Facebook groups selling all sorts of aftermarket and standard bits as a lot are worth more dead than alive.

I would suggest a fiesta, easy to work on and good parts availability.
I've got a 2007 MK6 1.4 petrol as a daily car and its great, I fitted a track rod end and front brake pads last night in an hour for less than £25 from Euro Car Parts.
I've even fitted it with a towbar which comes in useful on occasions.
If your interested in modifying one you can get all kinds of stuff secondhand like alloy wheels, bigger engines, leather seats etc. I've kept mine standard (apart from the towbar) as its really just an old beater.

Hi all, I am new to spannering but I just love older cars. I would like a small car to use as a daily and just tinker with. Maybe upgrade parts and do a engine swap, just to improve my mechanical skills. I have a small budget under 1k ( need to be frugal due to covid) what do you suggest? If I was going to get a 106 or a 205 does it matter if I go petrol or diesel? Or are there better tinker cars our there? Thanks I cut my teeth on petrol 6n Polo's (1994-1999) and I learned most of what I know on those. They're very easy to work on and maintain and they're decent little cars to run about in. I've actually just put a deposit down on a 6n2 TDI to have as a daily so I can stop burning ££££ notes straight out of the tailpipe of my Soarer.

I've just bought a Polo 6N1 to use as a daily, it's the second one I've had now, my newest is a 1.6GL and for a little car it's quite nippy.
They're a doddle to work on, VWHeritage do parts, as do most places, and there's a forum full of info over at clubpolo.co.uk.
I also have a Renault 5, pain in the Harris to find parts for, but it's been reliable.
