Currently looking for a cheap/small £30 a year road tax daily, something like an early C1/107/Aygo etc and there's definitely no huge price crash on the small/economical stuff. If anything they've tripled in price, with four figure sums being asked for 15 year old and fairly average cars that 6 months ago were well under £1k. That may just be a 'started college' phenomenon, (as 2nd & 3rd year students they'll sell the cars for partying money). I thought that but prices are hugely inflated across the board in this part of the country, especially for small-mid size stuff. As an example, 2007 Toyota Yaris in fairly low spec, ok condition and miles, £3.5k ... ... for a 13 year old low spec runaround. If that's the current state of the market, I'll not be buying a small car anytime soon. The only cheap stuff either needs major work or hasn't got an MOT (COVID MOT extensions do not count). All I want is a car with £30 RFL, small, decent amount of MOT, sound mechanicals and no serious body damage/grot. My only spec essential is aircon, anything else is a bonus.

My wife owns a 2005 fiesta 1.2 She’s owned six years and has decided to buy herself a new fiesta How much will I get for the old one ? I suggested £400 it is still in very good condition as I’ve looked after the car for her The car has three people on it by word of mouth It’s promised to a work colleague for £900 a price they offered , apparently small hatchbacks are impossible to find or buy at the moment Crazy times at the moment

Also, one other thing, what is it with dented sills? I've been driving for *cough* years and have managed, very easily, to avoid battering the living snot out of the sills of any car I've owned. I'd say 60% (100% not an accurate statistic, probably) of the older used cars I've seen have had significant, if not major damage to at least one sill. How? How do they manage it? It must be intentional. Have a photo of bonkers sills/skirts as penance.

A bloke at work has big dents in both sills on his leased Peugeot, it's from where he takes his cars to get part worns thrown on. Evidently they launch the jack under a car and wherever it stops is where it's getting jacked up Serves him right really.

Try a Fiat panda, vastly underated and not trendy so seem to stay off the radar.

What an utterly ridiculous over dramatic headline - fight your way through the dross of that article to the actual numbers and in the midst of a global pandemic and I would be over the moon with figures only down 4.4% for September compared to last year - lowest for 20 years - no no that's not good enough lets use Century for a better dramatic effect to suck in the dimly lit.

That huge car price crash still hasn't happened, quite the opposite it seems.
With both my cars currently... resting... I've been idly browsing for a cheap winter beater. You know the sort of thing, a mid to late 90s generic hatchback or small saloon with a few months MoT for under £500. Nothing special, something that can be disposed of once you're done with it because it's unlikely to see another MoT anyway.
The idle browsing has stayed just that. Even moving into newer cars, and even increasing the budget to £1200, the pickings are slim. It seems used cars, and especially anything that can be considered old enough to be a classic, are worth a lot more now than they were this time last year.
Whether it lasts or not is a different matter. I suppose a lot of people are wanting to find something to tide them over until the world returns to normal but aren't doing enough miles to justify buying something new, so instead they're turning to what was the cheap car market and demand is simply inflating the price of the supply.
On the plus side, my own cars are worth a good amount more than they were because of this, just a shame I'm not planning on selling either of them to cash in.

I have a sub £1k Polo with 12 months ticket sat on my drive that nobody seems to want. It did nothing on eBay and autotrader has thus far generated zero interest. It doesn't seem expensive compared to the others out there and it's not done mega miles either. On the other hand, all the stuff I've been watching on ebay seems to have sold, including stuff at what I thought was strong money.

I have a vague search on Gumtree, diesels under £1000 for that 'what if I needed a commuter hack quick' type scenario.
Certainly noticed a lot more mega miles stuff coming up, a 20yo A4 with 300,000 miles anyone? £800.

Prompted by another question here, I had a look at Car and Classic for a couple of my 'goto's' today, Volvo 480 and Porsche 924. Certainly no cheapies left!
Weather asking prices are being met is another matter mind.......

Still looking for a cheap small daily here with no joy.
Anything on eBay as an auction always seems to vastly exceed what you'd expect to pay for it and the classifieds that are sat on the shelf are massively overpriced. There's a 320d E46 touring that's been on there for over a year, it's the ultimate povvo spec with a rough MOT history, a rapidly depleting valid MOT and will clearly need a fair wedge spent on it in short order but it remains in four figure territory.
Autotrader has less than 25 cars under £1k within a 40 mile radius of where I live and it's all either spares/repairs with no MOT or just dross that would probably snuff it on the way home. As for Gumtree, the site/app makes me so angry with its sheer awfulness that I gave up using it after I found my current daily on there. Well, that and the fact that most of the stuff on there is the same overpriced tat that's on eBay anyway.
I don't use FB, so have no idea about that.

Pitstop has just replaced her 2003 1.6 SE Honda Civic because she needed a larger car. Fair bodywork but it burns oil, needs a new clutch and attention to the rear brakes. It had 5 months MOT on it and she was totally honest with the buyer. On FB Marketplace for less than an hour for £250. Bought by a local lad who ordered the parts same day and fixed the clutch and brakes 24 hours later. He spent a £134 on the parts and brought it round to show her 2 days later.
They're out there but you've just got to be quick and willing to commit.

Prices definitely are high at the moment. I bought a 2004 175,000mile Passat diesel to commute in, in January for £1000. Sold last week for £1150. And that was to the first person who came to look, 48hrs after i put the advert on facebook. I dare say I could have got more if I held out as already had a few others interested but wanted an easy sale.

But we had numpties offering £400 without viewing it This is the Facebook Marketplace curse, it makes it far too easy for these bellends to spam you with low offers. If they had to turn up and look you in the eye 99% of them wouldn't have the guts.

I kid you not i had a £300 e46 touring for sale the other week once we finished using it as a tip wagen, on the road mot'd . i got stupid bookfart dingbats offering half my asking price... they actually had the cheek to message. The worst thing is they arnt even polite, its just a message "150" to what my reply is "450" then it gets them kicking off as it was advertised for 300 lol .. it did sell though in 12 hours to a lovely guy but still. you got to have dead pan humor or be incredibly rude ?
i don't really see much a crash if I'm honest. Stuff will always have a following and in every following theres what i call the money bags fraternity where they will mop up any bargains or good deals in harder times sadly, and reap the benefits when they double there money in years to come!! Hopefully this whole pandemic has spurred people on to realise a hobby outside of the pub and shopping centres is actually a cool and good thing ... who knows?

My brother was selling his e46 a few years ago - I think that one of the websites actually encourages you to make an offer by entering a number, and then sends the message as if the person buying had just typed the number as a message. He had quite a lot of offers like that
