I want an AWD as we want to go to the snow. I don't want having to put on snow chains and at home I drive a fair bit of gravel roads. When entering the Snowy Mountains or the Victoria High Country you have to carry snow chains unless you have an AWD or 4WD. I hate putting snow chains on and of. An all terrain tire will do well in the snow.

I would honestly only consider the Volvo if you need 7 seats. As mentioned over the last 20 years I have had 4 volvos, currently still have a Volvo. The earlier ones were great, the modern ones reliability issues have crept in (I'm classing xc90 as modern as my current Volvo is 2005). Over the last 12 years we also have a wrx and I can tell you now if I had the funds available I would swap my Volvo for a decent Leggy/outback or forester tomorrow.
Forester xt is very similar running gear and engine to the wrx, so would be a great fun wolf in sheeps clothing. We average between 25 and 30mpg so about the same a diesel xc90. Lesser engine foresters have high and low range box in manual form so would probably be a more capable car than the Volvo off road. Over here subarus used to be a farmers favorite. Outback 3.0 will drink a bit more fuel, around low 20's, but the cam chain driven flat 6 is bullet proof. Subaru have been awd for donkeys years and know how to do it properly.

We 'drive' an xc70, it's a 2007 model 2.5 5cyl diesel. (I say drive because my wife works downstairs at home and I go with the bike to my work so it is mostly sitting in front of our house) First, it's a lot of taxes here because of the euro4 (how much it pollutes) and the big engine and amount of cilinders. I think we pay more every year to have permission to drive it on the road then we put diesel in it . Second, I don't know if I like how it drives that much. It goes good enough, pulling that is, but sometimes when you're driving and hit a pot hole or something it can be a bit twitchy or how do you explain it... So, I like it, it's acceptably fast, spacy, good looking imho, never used the awd ability of it yet so could have gone for a V70, but a bit expensive in yearly taxes and sometimes it's a bi all over the road. (that said I am planning on replacing the rear shocks, could improve after that) Not a real help but it's an opinion of an owner

Forgot to mention, the problems with diesel particulate filters on post 2006 models. Instead of my Volvo I was going to buy a late 2006/early 2007 model v70 d5.
As the post above says, they do pull well and sound great for a diesel, but contrary to the above post, I found it one of the nicest cars I have driven (although did test drive another that wasn't as good and a little twitchy so may be wear and tear)
Pre 2006 d5 had 163bhp and 5 speed (manual) post had 185bhp and 6 speed and are a nicer car. However, these later cars have the dreaded dpf that every so often go into a regeneration mode. If this cycle isn't completed the car ends up going into limp mode, requiring an expensive trip to a dealer for forced regeneration and a reset of the ecu. Problem is it also ends up topping the sump oil up with diesel, diluting the oil and causing the oil level to rise dangerously for the engine. Volvos recall solution was to put a sticker in the engine bay instructing that oil level should not be topped up above 3/4 full on the dipstick, which isn't really a solution just a preventative measure.
For that reason alone I bought a different model.

I've waxed lyrical on the joys of an early XC70 many times on this forum and I maintain they are ace vehicles for stupid low money. Mine was a D5 163hp geartronic model and it was plenty fast and averaged over 42 real mpgs including a daily commute in rush hour. 0-60 is about 10 secs I think but the mid-range oomph put a real smile on my face. Loads of toys, supremely solid and one of the all time great dog wagons imho.
I took mine upto 230k before the haldex ECU stopped communicating and a fix was beyond me but it moved onto someone else who knew what they were doing and it's back in sterling service again. Autobox was always golden, despite some horror stories on the net.
I've no doubt it'll do many more thousands of miles and I miss it a lot.
I'd have another no worries.

I think that I have to let go of the Volvo. I do like it and one day I might buy a Volvo wagon but not this time. So, I am still looking at the; Nissan Xtrail (T30 before the CVT) The Honda C-RV because it will look good next to my wife's Odyssey and they are apparently really good cars Subaru Forester, Outback or Legacy in that order.
Cars that I also think of but then only for short term ownership. One that I can buy dirt cheap and sell with a little profit after we come back. For example a Shogun/Pajero but a diesel is above my budget and a 6 Cylinder to thirsty, but they can be bought cheap The Surf,4Runner and Hilux in auto will be very expensive and even harder to find.
Thanks again

The car I am least interested in is the Pajero V6. So, of course we are looking at a Pajero tomorrow morning....It's very cheap and it looks like a great deal. TBC

Subaru Legacy.
Mine was 2.5 estate flavour and would do the Stafforshire moors on a winter daily commute with no issues.

Great choice on the Paj. We have one as the family workhorse and I love it, loads of space so great for camping trips etc. I installed a Bluespark tuning box, it's a win all round with better fuel economy and more grunt. I'd recommend one if you can get one down your way.

Bluespark tuning box, appears to be only for Pajero Diesels. My one is a 3.8 V6.
Thanks

Can't stand 'em. THe rear diff casing things break, the have bad turning circle, mostly seem difficult to work on for no apparent reason and the electrics are dreadful, and plasticy. Get a Honda CRV or Nissan or Toyota something. Only good thing about volvos is comfortable seats.

Here a random 10 second list of (Volvo) reasons to be cheerful: 1. The D5 pre-DPF engine 2. The performance and looks of an Amazon GT 3. The HU-803 factory audio system in phase 2 V70s - incredible sound 4. Flooring a T5 at full chat away from the lights 5. The quality of steel, fixtures and fittings on models I've owned (4) from 80s to 00s compared with other cars I've owned (27) in the same period 6. The take it all and come back for more awesomeness of my Ph2 XC70 7. Rickard Rydells sheepdog stuffed 850 wagon in the BTCC 8. Rickard Rydells BTCC winning S40 a couple of years later 9. The light oak floating dash in a ph2 V50! How ace is that! 10. Gull yellow on an 850R You're right about the seats though. They are lovely.
