Just did a flush on the cooling system and on pulling off the Thermostat housing there was no thermostat I had a replacement but havent fitted it yet. Done a good flush but my concern is i'm guessing this car had a overheating problem. It has a big aftermarket alloy radiator and until recently there was a redundant switch under the dash (guessing for an old electric fan) . I'm just thinking if i put it all back together and it starts getting really hot... what can i change or what would somebody have missed in the past on cooling a 2.0 pinto?

Hi, If it's got a big new radiator then it will need the thermostat to ensure the engine runs at the correct temperature otherwise it will be running cold.

Just fit a stat to it, there are lots of different temperature ones available, try and get one with a bypass hole as it makes filling easier, or drill yourself a small (maybe 3mm) hole in the new one. Big alloy rads are cheaper than standard ones sometimes. Pintos are hard to kill, even if it had been well and try cooked it will probably run ok once the original problem was resolved. Check what temperature sensor is fitted too, again there is a range of different ones, it is possible someone fitted the wrong one then paniced when it appeared to be running hot, removing the stat and fitting a new rad.... Pintos run better warm rather than cold from experience the back to back performance difference with a cold weather stat and hot weather stat was noticeable.

Will fit it and see what happens. The QH one i have seems to be in the right range from what the Haynes says so i''ll throw it in. Being an Alloy Rad with a screw top cap i guess i just fill it through here and don't have to worry about the bypass hole? Bought a second Thermostat as i was missing the rubber seal but i might take it back and try and blag the seal as it has 92 c stamped on it I changed the Temp sensor a couple of times due to thinking that was why the needle didnt move at all (worked when tested ) so i guess this is why. Weirdly on my Escort 1.1 i never thought to change the Temp sensor and that runs cold to quite hot when sat in traffic and i changed the radiator and thermostat on that. I just bought a new sensor to try on that car.

I can't remember the correct temperature range of the top of my head 88 rings a bell, but no idea if that is winter or summer use.
I think the alloy rads are made for the RS2000 and some may require an expansion tank.
What is this pinto fitted into? On my Transit I messed about for ages trying to get the temperature gauge working, eventually I realised the needle was sitting so far passed cold that even when fully warned up it barely moved from the cold position. I ended up setting it so with no power connected the needle pointed at cold. Runs bang on central now. That gauge worked when tested too, would go full deflected if earthed.
