35 Years ago today, the Sinclair C5 was released! Over 14,000 made, with companies such as Lotus behind the engineering. Hoover could make 50 an hour, and had the capacity to make 8000 a week. The completed C5's would roll off the assembly line and into their boxes. A C10 and C15 proper road cars were also in design, but never saw the light of day sadly. Famous owners included Elton John (a popular singer song write), Harry & Billy Windsor and Arthur C. Clarke. I know we have a few owners on here, myself included.

I won one of these as 'performer of the month' yea... dwell on that for a second.... and up until we moved house 20 years ago it was still in the box unopened. Sad to say it didn't make the move and ended up in the skip along with a lot of other stuff I wish I had kept... As an aside I played Poker with Sir Clive - think he made money from that than many of his other ventures. P.

My cousin was the 11th person to buy one. I remember riding it back in the day! Suffice to say he still has it with very few miles on the clock!

it looks like a normal lead acid car battery, is that right ?
for some reason i had it in my head that they became obsolete (with age) due to the battery and left only human powered versions, whats the skinny ?

I'd love to get one and fit a big f-off lipo battery and a serious motor so it went like stink.

I really need to get my uncle to drag his one out his garage. My nan won it in a raffle and its never turned a wheel, which in hindsight has probably done it no favours at all. I'm not sure if its a mk1 or not, i'll have to go and see if its got a grey bootlid thanks to vanpeebles for that little nugget of infomation.

I didn't realise that that the Sinclair C5 was actually released 35 years ago - I thought it escaped . . . .

You can use leisure batteries etc. They just need a change of clamp on the cable. The original had a locking mechanism with a key.
