Given the general photobucket horribleness and the effort that it takes to edit and upload lots of photos for forum posts, I worked out how to link images straight from google photos which simplifies the process a lot (for me anyway!). Been meaning to post a little how-to if anyone else wants to try it.
If you have a phone with google photos installed it automatically uploads all your pictures to google. That's the upload part taken care of. In the app or the photos.google.com website you get decent editing tools. Typically when writing my posts I have google photos open in the next tab and just copy links to the images I want with very little faff involved.
Caveats:
> Doesn't work from mobile (ironically)
> Gives a very long photo link - not really an issue though
> Not always obvious if everyone can see the image - more on this below.
> If you use a camera rather than a phone to take photos it's probably not that much of a time saver
1) Install the google photos app on your phone if you haven't already got it... Make sure that it's set to auto back up your pictures, which I think is the default behaviour. Your photos will now appear already uploaded on photos.google.com
2) By default only you can access the photos - you need to explicitly make them public. To do this make a new album and add the photos you want to it. In the album, click the 'Share' button and select 'Create Link'. This makes all photos in this album visible to anyone with the link. Any future images you want to share, simply add them to the album. I have a shared album per car that I also use as a maintenance/work log, or you could have a forum images album etc.
3) To add an image to a post use the google photos website to go to the shared album, then click the picture you want. Right click the full screen picture and select "Copy Image Address". Now in your retro rides post - in the full reply mode - use the insert image button in the top, paste in your copied link and press insert. All done.
It is important that you open the image in google photos from the shared album rather than the camera roll - otherwise the image will not be publicly shared. Confusingly you will still be able to see it as it is your picture - but nobody else will be able to see it! If you want to check what your post looks like to others use private browsing (Firefox, ctrl+shift+p) or Incognito Mode (Chrome, ctrl+shift+n) to view the thread.
Another way to check is if the address of the google photos page you're getting the link from starts with photos.google.com/share/xxxxxxxx... you're good. If it's photos.google.com/photo/xxxxxxxx... only you will be able to see it.
Hopefully that's useful - I can clarify any areas if needed
Can't have a thread about photos without a photo...Have a surprised looking 944 and a moody capri.
