Hi all i have a 1996 MGF 1.8VVC It has been running Fine Pretty much since i bought it in 2004. Around 4 years Ago it did have a replacement Multi Layer gasket and Again has been fine sine .. However on 3 recent Occasions after a 20 to 50 Mile trip It Appears to boil up from the expansion tank With Lots of Pressure that forces steam/water over the engine and out the Bootlid vent ... I have changed the thermostat with a genuine part including the casing. At the time i checked the blades on the water pump which was in good condition ..I did the usual air bleeds from the engine rad and bulkhead and there was a good flow from all points.. The heater is working fine so the matrix is not blocked
..i did run it up to temperature the other night and the fan cut in and out fine with the gauge around half way..
Any ideas on what could be causing this ??

i did put a New genuine cap on which i thought had cured it then it did it again about month later

It sound like your water pump needs changing and give the entire system a good chemical flush and clean out at the same time.

A friend of mine had a similar issue on his VW Split screen with a Scooby engine conversion, and it running a K-Series header tank,
In his case, the header tank was gone and the car could not keep the pressure anymore. As soon as he binned it off for a new tank and cap, the problems went away.

The radiators can suffer pretty badly on these and the fans can pack up.

The problem has got a lot worse now and will only go a few miles before Water is forced out the header tank so it is out of use at the moment ... i did Run a head gasket test with the blue test fluid in the tube and the first 2 tests it stayed the same ... then i found a massive airlock in the pipes that run under the car after that was cleared the 3rd and 4th test the fluid went to a light blue/green colour.. I am pretty sure its gases system as the water rises almost to the top of the header tank then drops and rises again .
i did a compression test which has resulted in a further problem
cylinder 1 is 220psi
Cylinder 2 is 230psi
Cylinder 3 could not be tested has the plug had been leaking gas passed the thread and has destroyed the thread so was unable to connect the compression tester to it
Cylinder 4 is 200psi

When it had the gasket done before did you fit the metal dowels and check the liner heights? If not that's your problem.

Did you just change the gasket, or did you replace the head bolts, water pump as well?
The heater circuit can develop an airlock which can be the devils own job to clear, you need to get the car nose down when bleeding and you could try fitting an auxiliary bleed such as item 292744817013 on eBay into the return pipe in the engine compartment. There’s a reason Rover used a vacuum system to fill the k-series cooling systems.
Others have already mentioned the expansion tank and cap, both can fail causing boil overs. That said, your does sound like the head gasket may have gone again.
