I've currently got a W210 Merc estate, lovely old bus, but probably an MOT failure in Jan.
I need a big old estate, I'd fancy an earlier Merc estate, something to cover both Retro and estate, as my Beetle is going to be off the road for a few years.
Anything nice and cool out there?
20mpg would be nice, reliability is a big factor.
Preferably 2-3k, but would do 5 for something ace.
South of the UK would be handy, but not a deal breaker.
Nice one!

The asking price of that, and what I'd pay for it, are very far apart...!

The asking price of that, and what I'd pay for it, are very far apart...! Fair enough. You said 5 for something ace, and that’s ace in my book!

How far south is too far? Got an '89 EA Falcon wagon here. Only 449,000 kms on the odo (which still works). Not real rusty cos we don't salt the roads in New Zealand. Needs a good clean cos it's been sitting for a few years. Stopped using it cos the trans won't hook reverse but it can come with a spare trans out of an XF that should be a straight swap.

Well I was hoping somewhere in the south of the UK, the southern hemisphere might make picking it up a touch tricky.

The asking price of that, and what I'd pay for it, are very far apart...! FWIW, my old S124 E320 estate went for under £6k, and I understand my friend, who sold it, had a number of buyers interested. The days of cheap W124s are not quite over, but it's certainly harder to find a clean one IME. I know that 2 years ago I struggled to find a nice diesel S124 for under £3k that wasn't rotten or simply tired. The difference between that car and my W124 250D were significant, and that the 250D had buyers interested at £1.5k, which is what it went for in the end. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/209714/1995-mercedes-benz-w124-estate?page=2I'll put the feelers out. Mates of mine have the following for sale, but I suspect only one may float your boat: -S123 200T Estate in Light Ivory ; It's got a ticket but it does have rust spots here and there. But then it is a 123 estate that's £2.5k IIRC. I'm sure if you went in with an offer he'd talk -W202 C250 DT : I'm not a fan of W202 but this is a really really clean car, to the extent I'm almost tempted to buy it! IIRC that chap wants £2k, but I can confirm that. -W124 220E : It's got lacquer peel but it's solid where it counts (subframe mounts and jacking points being two areas), It's got brand new Kumhos all round, and is a nice thing to drive. I think he wants around £2k for that. The first car is in Rugby, and can be found via @cosford_hall_classics on Instagram. The second two are by a mate in Southam.

Sorry for the late replies, family stuff always gets in the way.
S123 sounds great, downside is that by the time you can see the rot on the surface it's 10 times worse underneath. 124's have gone batshit in price quite quickly.
That 245 with a 940 lump looks brilliant - I don't think I can get the budget quite up there really. Nice motor though.
Age - nothing strict, but something that the first reaction of people is 'you don't see them about anymore' would be good.
The bigger the better.

I expect the days of a cheap V8 falcon wagon or a hardtop valiant are long gone in NZ? I know I've got curse word all chance of finding a charger at a price I can afford....

You'd be right with the Charger. House money there. Still some cheap '90s and newer Falcons around but expect to pay real money for the older more desirable ones.
