Thank you all, the knowledge in this place never ceases to amaze me. I'd heard of big block motors, and always assumed that they were quite a specialised thing, like a special order. Would police cruisers at that time have a 'cop package', like Elwood describes in The Blues Brothers? 'It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks' Looking at tonycocacola's pics, I guess the second one is a Monaco, a la the Bluesmobile. Is the top one a Dart or Polara, as Dez suggested? Yes and No. cop suspension and shocks doesn’t mean much. Spring rates were usually linked to engine choice rather than anything else. A v8 car would have heavier front springs than a 6, and a big block would probably have heavier springs again. Usually the only thing that got heavier rear springs were station wagons. A ‘heavy duty’ shock package could be specced on any car. Cop tyres flat out don’t exist. The epitome of ‘cop trim’ is base spec body and interior (rubber mats and vinyl seats for wipe-clean ability), utilitarian options such as keep fit windows etc so they’re simple and rugged, but with larger, faster motors. But generally always in a 4dr sedan package for ease of chucking miscreants in the back

The car in the music video looks more like a 1950s coronet to me:

I've got a good book about american police cars and it's a great read. Some police departments had their own cam grinds and all kinds. They would spilt the cars into groups. Some cars are just set up as taxis, only the pursuit and highway stuff had mods and things. Some had toughed chassis etc.

I would have thought that ‘Classified’ by CW McColl (McCall?) would be more suited to most of us on here 😀

Always liked the Steve Earl song, although I always heard it as"Gran Daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge"
I like the way the song takes a left turn around the second or third verse; where he comes home from Vietnam with a brand new plan.
