Still think it's funny how some curse word slow car's are so expensive vs some nice quick stuff isn't. Biggest surprise is the 2006 A6 2.0tdi, it's less than my 2006 golf plus 🤷♂️
An a £11k up gti (0-60 in 8.5) is £2200 when a mk1 focus 1.6 (£250 car) is £3700

Up Gti's are meant to be pretty good, but the beetle is probably the easiest to add personal touches to. The dad in me would be looking at the euro NCAP's of the contenders now... James

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but to be the boring sod . . .
When she gets to that tee-junction and looks right, looks left and pulls out . . . and gets t-boned by the Mondeo/X5/whacking great audi . . .
Which car would you rather she was in while she learns where and when to look, where to position the car etc so she can learn to look right again . . .?
Not that I'm speaking from experience of 32 yrs ago . . .

Ncap isn't the whole story, a large part of it is now about pedestrian safety and having all the gadgets, mass also doesent come into it, a few years ago defender had the best occupant injury rate but the worst ncap!

Defenders aren't actually that heavy (2ish tonnes) in modern terms - they are slow with very good visibility though.... When had a look a bit back I was pretty shocked to see few people in defenders get injured - they have all the crash-worthiness of a biscuit tin above the chassis. As you say though bigger is better though a 5 star small car will come off a lot worse than a 5 star big car. Volvo XC90 for the win though ! James

Thats why I tried an A6 lol Beetle 1.4 is possibly the best of the lot, not exactly fast, hard to park but your sat about halfway along the car so your 7ft away from a front or rear impact (we had a 2001 1.6 beetle, vase holds your ecig nicely lol) If I get chance, I'll run a few more things through, only takes about 1min. Will be faster on a pc though.

Wow - thanks all. I post the thread and go away for a few days and return to 6 pages of suggestions! Thanks for the love....
Price wise, i am happy to pay about £2.5k to £3k for the car. The insurance we will sort out somehow. I expect this to be between £1.5k and £2k.
I am concious about putting her in a tiny tin car and setting her free on our UK roads. A Range rover hitting a Citroen C1 would be messy.

I would set up a compare the market quote with all her accurate details & run something like a Beetle 1.4 or VW Up through and see how it compares to the ones I did - I kinda did worst case scenario. Adding yourself on & maybe considering a pass plus course should bring it down, also if your postcode is better than one of the worst ones in Sheffield should help lol.
Once you have run a quote, click on the 1 bit at the top, then edit registration number & change it to another car, then next, next, quote & you have the next quote in under 1 min
Also, avoid anything thats been cat c/d/s/n as it will be more expensive to insure - sometimes even if a car hasn't been written off but has had an insurance claim against it, it can be more costly to insure - doesnt always show up on a hpi either!

She then wrote that off just before going to Uni....... She recently asked about another car(she still has £2k with all the payouts somehow) and as a renewal Tesco bank box quoted £950 ...go figure

I am concious about putting her in a tiny tin car and setting her free on our UK roads. A Range rover hitting a Citroen C1 would be messy. If safety is your primary concern, not retro but certainly quirky and unusual is the Peugeot 1007; Electric sliding doors; Flappy-paddle gearshift; Coloured panels / sear covers can be swapped out; Engine options start with the glacially slow 1.4 litre petrol through the frugal diesels and onto to the pedestrian 1.6 litre petrol engine with flappy-paddle tiptronic. The sliding door mechanisms add a lot of weight which also makes it expensive to fix which I would expect to see reflected in the insurance groups, (which vary between 4 & 12). £3K would buy you a cosseted low mileage example. Safety? It scored the highest ncap rating for adult occupant safety in supermini class. This funky little car didn't take off, the 1007 was to Peugeot what the Edsel was to Ford. Edsels are now highly prized!

Peugeot 1007; My sister in law works for Peugeot, in the service department. It's one of as the least reliable of them all. The door electrics were failing even under warranty and the 1.4 petrol eats head gaskets for fun.

My son is part of the young driver statistics as he wrote off his Fiesta 6 days in.
With youngsters, age seems to matter more than anything. The price Tom is paying for his first year makes me want to weep (Manchester postcode, parked in public car parks during the day, honest about likely mileage). His sister passed her test at 17 but didn't drive a car until she was 21 because she was away at uni so there was little point paying a fortune for her to be a named driver. At 21, it cost here roughly a grand to insure a 1.25 Fiesta. After a year, she could insure an ST for similar money.

Everyone moans about insurance cost. Not even close to what it was in the mid 2000’s, it’s come down hugely. My Son was 17 in 2005, he had (& still has it, sleeping in my garage) a 1.3 Ka. Cheapest quote £2650, next closest quote to that was almost double. We live in a nice area, car garages etc etc. If your kids are now paying £1500 or less, don’t moan.

In 2000 (at 17) my 205 Rallye was £2100 f/c in sk14 postcode (bit curse word) I was working full time and was earning £3600 per year. So yeah, insurance hasn't gotten expensive, it's actually pretty decent.
