Values pulled down by the dead automatics that 'don't require oil changes' ? I must be a genius, I managed to change the gearbox oil twice,,,,, despite ‘sealed for life’

If buying any volvo of that era, google "etb failure" - not hard to fix, just expensive. It was volvos first attempt at an electronic throttle body (rather than cable), and it has some design flaws in the electrical contacts which meant they wore out very quickly.

I like these too and had them on my list when shopping for an estate to replace my BMW 330i touring recently (which in turn came after a series of turbo Volvos). I wanted an auto though and having owned a 2002 V70 T5 with the AW55 'box that needed a few fluid changes to keep it behaving, I wanted a 6 speed so ended up buying a later P3 D5 model. The one in the link above is a manual though and looks great, I'd buy it. Loads of info on Volvo Forums if you need help

I'm a bit confused Wayne. I thought the V70XC (as described in the ad) were these: ...but the car in the add is the Phase 2 V70 derivative - the XC70. Wonder if its got a private plate and the vendor thinks its older than it is? Regardless, I've got one and they're blooming ace. I don't think there's any difference between that generation of XC70 from implementation to the facelift in circa 2006. That's (roughly) when the D5 engine was upgraded from 163 to 182 bhp and given a DPF. Not sure about the 2.4 petrol but presume its a 170 bhp unit. They also did a 2.4 with 140 bhp but that didn't make it into the XC70 for that generation of cars. The chocolate haldex system was the V70XC one. XC70 systems are less iffy. Auto boxes can be fine or not fine. Mine's got 220k on it and is spot on. The fluid hasn't been changed and I was advised by a Volvo tech to leave it alone as it would disturb any curse word and cause more problems than it solved - this was him turning down easy money at the time so tend to think there was something in it but if you put that view forward on the Volvo forums you get blacklisted! What is fair to say is those who avoid the autobox are prone to ignore the numbers of manual cars that need clutch and DMF at circa 150k which is a mega bucks bill. Hope you get one. They are great cars.

It’s a bit complex. The P80 cars (like that beautiful one above) were all V70XC’s. The very early P2 cars (like the one on Gumtree) were also described as V70XC. They changed to XC70 when the XC90 was released.
The early P2’s had the VW diesel, Volvo’s D5 was introduced in around 2002.
It’s not a huge problem to change the auto box fluid. You can do a big flush (which has risks) or you can swap 4 litres every time you change the engine oil. Very happy with mine.

My 2000 V70XC turbo is going strong at 224k, but its autobox doesn't like to downshift at times, and it would rather not reverse. Still, I drive it every day. Here it is with a 2.0 Fiat Twin Cam in its hatch : )
