I can't believe someone on a car forum would think like that. That thinking soon goes on to lets ban pre 1980 cars, or lets ban bikes, or old people!! It's a sanctioned event with roads blocked/marked/signed/marshalled for the cars, so perfectly suitable for the day in question. Terrible tragedy for the couple involved. My comment isn't specific to this event, I mean in general. Get off your high horse, if you can't keep up with modern traffic or brake in a reasonable distance then get off the road. My 1952 Jowett Javelin - is well built, very comfortable & a joy to drive - However, its not has quick in acceleration has modern vehicles, it takes a longer distance to stop it too, its on really good quality cross ply tyres that prevents you from doing stupid things in bends or on roundabouts - taking these things into consideration when driving like leaving larger gaps between moving vehicles / ensuring that the vehicles intended moves are well signalled / generally ensuring that the vehicle travels at a safe speed - Therefore its driven far more sensibly than the vast majority of moderns - BUT has far you are concerned I don't have the right to be on the road - I wonder if the same thinking in your head also applies to slow moving abnormal loads, horses, cycles, agricultural vehicles, construction vehicles etc and they should also be banned ?

The issue was with the DRIVER and NOT the car. Had the driver not accidentally taken the wrong turning the car and he would, probably, have arrived at Brighton in one piece. If a horse and rider had accidentally entered a motorway and been killed, we would not have suggested that we cull every sodding horse in the country. Most accidents are driver error related. That car should not have been on a motorway but that was down to the driver. That car was perfectly capable of being used in events and could well have been used to go down to Tescos for a shop, on the basis that the traffic around it would be limited to 30mph in a built up area anyway. I would rather see more stringent testing of Octogenarians in their suitability to drive on modern roads than ban old cars because they are mega slow and have no safety features.

Oh have a day off. The vehicle in question was older than yours, my point is that vehicles of a certain vintage should be banned... I don't know what the cut off would be, maybe pre 1945? And yes horses should be banned from public roads.

Completely agree on people having to retake some form of test once they hit 65/70

This was a terrible accident and my condolences to their family and friends. Like all accidents its a mixture of events and bad timing, and yes he would probably be alive today if he had not turned onto the motorway, its a shame he did not keep to the hard shoulder until he could exit safely but life is full of ifs and butts.
Its very difficult to legislate on older vehicles as you cant back date laws of vehicles. So they actually have the same rights as any other road user. All you can do is use common sense and stay off unsuitable roads. People know when the L to B run is on and should be aware as there are plenty of signs and advertising but i have no doubt more would help.
I do think people over 80 should have some sort of check to carry on driving but many 65 year old's are a damn site better drivers than a lot of younger clowns who drive to close, don't indicate, overtake on blind bends and over solid white lines, cut in, pull out of junctions, use mobiles and cant even park decent even if their lives depended on it.. and that goes for both male and females. I can honestly say I have seen driving standards take a big dive in the last few years and seem to be getting worse and worse.
I drive a 1965 Volvo Amazon but that can still cruise at 70 on the motorway, if its clear enough to actually get up to that speed lol..

I don't know what the cut off would be, maybe pre 1945?And yes horses should be banned from public roads. That needs putting to bed. A 1908 Model T can do over 40mph, it can easily keep up around town. A 1930s Jaguar SS100 can top the ton. A metric s**t ton of pre war ( both wars) cars are perfectly capable of using our roads and some motorways. Taking your point logically, we would ban everything from the 1950s, 60s and 70s too. Have you seen that crash test done in the US with the 50s finned saloon and the modern saloon? The 50s car was twice the size but the impact would have killed the occupants while the modern would have saved all onboard. That is the reality, any of us that drive 'classics' are , potentially, driving coffins should we have a biggish impact with a stout modern car with all the safety kit let alone the crumple zones. The danger is that you regulate certain cars off the road due to their age, speed and lack of safety for the occupants and you may as well do it for everything else that predates a collapsible steering column.

I have my opinion and everyone else has their opinion... That's fine. I personally believe that vehicles of a certain vintage are GENERALLY too unsafe and too slow for modern traffic.
In an ideal world where all road users respected everyone else and drove sensibly at all times... Fine. But the road is full or people who can barely drive, tanking around in horrid soulless SUV boxes and hating every second of driving. People today are stressed, tired and irritable on the road.
In specific, regulated events, brilliant. I am all for motoring heritage and admire cars of all ages. But on busy public roads, no.
Disagree or agree I don't give a monkeys.
P.s the SS100 cannot top 100 😊

P.s the SS100 cannot top 100 😊 Quote from Autocar… ''On test by the Autocar magazine in 1937 the 2½-litre (20 RAC hp rating) car was found, with the windscreen lowered, to have a maximum speed of 95 mph (153 km/h) and a 0–60 mph (97 km/h) time of 13.5 seconds. With the 3½-litre (25 RAC hp rating) the top speed reached the magic 100 mph (160 km/h) with a best of 101 mph (163 km/h) over the quarter mile and the 0–60 mph (97 km/h) coming down to 10.4 seconds''. Yes it can.

Banning anything because of one unfortunate incident, caused by a navigational error of a person from a different country/unfamiliar with British roads is stupid. curse word happens, luckily not very often. It's like saying we should ban all visitors from countries who drive on the right from driving in UK because that of that coward who hit the lad outside the army base recently

the road is full or people who can barely drive, Perhaps that is where any effort should be directed. Having a driving licence is a privilege, not a right, and it should be treated as such.

Here in New Zealand drivers are retested at age 75, age 80, and every two years after that. Not sure of the full details but a medical certificate of fitness to drive is included. Does the UK not have something similar?

So maybe we should ban modern drivers who are stressed, tired & irratable as YOU state they are the real problem.

Does the UK not have something similar? Yes it does. Medical checks done by doctor to prove fitness to drive once you reach 70 years old. You have renew your licence with the DVLA every 3 years after that and declare you are still fit to drive.

i don't have an issue with heated or even contentious discussion (and will happily join in with both) but this particular thread is the place for neither. simply out of respect , perhaps some should bear this in mind.

Agree so won't debate any further. Although if someone wants to start a dedicated thread I will happily discuss further. Also apologies if any of my comments crossed the line into personal insult.
