Report of the accident on the Daily Telegraph website refers to the event as a 'race' w*****s

I'm sorry but I am inclined to agree that vehicles of this vintage are unsuitable for public roads in 2019.
Deep condolences to the affected.

Drove the Crawley to Brighton section following / observing / stopping for photos etc today. Had to say the atmosphere was a little sombre in places as to be expected. Yes these old cars struggle in places with modern traffic and roundabouts but i let them through so they maintain momentum. Look forward to the event each year and there is a lot of organisation in place to maintain safety where possible. Photo taken in stationery traffic

I disagree, they should be the same as horses and bikes - they could be on normal b-roads and a-roads are fine but motorways should be a no-go

I assume it was a navigational error rather than purposefully entering the motorway. I'm sure even most of the competitors would agree that the motorway is no place for cars of that vintage. Very sad all the same.

MkX or Moderators, Please delete the above post by MkX URGENTLY
You may THINK you know the vehicle involved but to post the picture and name of people involved in the accident before any public statement has been made by Police or the Organisers is speculation and helps no-one.
MORE IMPORTANTLY is that the friends / family of those involved may not all have been informed yet. Would you want to find out you had lost a loved one (or were now beside yourself with worry not knowing which occupant of the car had been killed) via a public website?

Currently driving a 1972 BMW 1602 as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

The name ages and the car are on the newspaper websites and have been so for several hours so I assume the police have already made a statement.

These vehicles should not enter motorways but that said probably 80% of todays drivers should not enter motorways

A terrible day for all those affected. I went out this morning on part of the route. I didn't know anything about the crash at the time but there certainly wasn't the usual upbeat atmosphere out there dispite the perfect weather
I have to agree with the comments on these cars not being suitable for use on the motorway. The speeds these cars do just arnt up to it.

Apparently the driver 'wandered' from the official route and entered the Motorway in error.

Can I for one on behalf of every RR member / reader pass on our sincere condolences to those concerned in this tragic event You can for me, purely as a human act. I'm going to tread carefully here, as all the facts are not known but... A huge fan of vintage/classic, gatherings/racing/ rallies as I am, I'd hate to see things like the London-Brighton, etc., disappear. And God knows there's enough trying to make them do so. At the moment, at 63 years of age, I maintain my vehicle way above the standards of the Philippines requirements and certainly the UK as well (so to a standard the L-B organisers would accept). I'd stick mine though an MOT tomorrow. I also reckon I'm a pretty competent driver (note, I don't use the word good - not sure there's that many every day souls that could) but I also know that one day, I'll have to hang up my licence in the same way my Dad did when he realised that he could no longer cope with driving, especially on fast A-roads and motorways. At the time I had two emotions. Sadness, as he received his army "licence" in 1940 driving Scammell tractor units on battlefield tank recovery, was at Dunkirk and D-Day, so the end of a long driving career. Yet at the same time, delight that he made the decision at 83, whilst he still could, before it was made for him. I've known a few who didn't. Saying that , we got him a electric scooter on which he would go out with similarly equipped mates on lunchtime pub crawls round Llandudno - he'd have been less of a menace in his Astra. Hell's Granddad's! Don't relish the idea, but like to think I'll be the same as my Old Man and pack in when I should. Don't know quite what I'm trying to say, and sadness all round, but sometimes it's not just the vehicle we need to consider and I'd like to think I'll hang my hat up before I cause anyone a problem. I remember Sir Stirling Moss in an interview at Le Mans for a Classic race pulling out and retiring. He said it all. Flame away, but I make no judgements in this case and please, note my first caveat.

georgeb you've put, in a very polite and non accusing manner, what I, and some others no doubt, have been thinking. Knowing when to stop. I don't think I could have written it as well as you did, which without knowing all the fact is why I haven't posted till now. Still, it is very sad for all involved.

I was following the run via various sources on social media - I've wanted to go see the run for years but haven't it's a great tradition in my opinion, it's a real tragedy for the family and all involved.
