Most modern alterntors don't have the traditional bulb which excites the field coils, they have a computer on board which controls the charge based on a mixture of inputs (ie many will go to max charge when you are decelerating to recover kinetic energy from the vehicle).
Also means if the whole thing packs up they don't necessarily turn the charge light on, I would be inclined to fit a known to function secondhand alternator and see if that fixes it. If that fails get someone with a volvo diagnostics equipment/experience to look at it.

Whether a ‘99 V70 counts as modern.........?
‘96 A6 certainly doesn’t.

Whether a ‘99 V70 counts as modern.........? ‘96 A6 certainly doesn’t. Nick depends if its a P80 or the later P2 platform vehicle, the former would be a last of the line of cars originally launched in 96, based on the 850

Firebird - don't know if you're on the VOC forum (if not - join up. Very knowledgeable - www.volvoforums.org.uk/index.php ) but members regularly post up for other members nearby with Vida/Dice to help them diagnose issues. If there's someone local to you I'm sure they'd be happy to help.

I've been taking a break from my volvo problems, but just looked back on here and saw some new replies. As soon as it stops raining I might as well remove the alternator that is probably fairly old or even the original and try to fit a replacement and see what happens. Joining the Volvo forum might be a good move as well as I would like to keep my old estate going for as long as practical because I can't think of a replacement that would be as good for all the load carrying and towing .

New alternator fitted today ( awkward job on a V70 )and all running properly again with the Battery symbol coming on again and vanishing like it should once running. Thanks to all who helped with advice, my trust in the AA is not what it was, I was almost ready to give up because I thought The ECU would be beyond my skills !

You have to remember the AA and any breakdown service can only carry so much kit and the drivers only know so much. As long as they get you somewhere home safe, as far as my RAC cover is concerned, they have done their job. Anything above recovery in my mind is a bonus and have never taken a recovery agents diag as gospel due to the circumstances they are operating under. I had a Rover Mini recovered once as a breakdown because the cambelt had snapped. Err, no.. no it hadn't, because they don't have one. Long and shot of it is they ain't a mobile workshop. Glad to hear the car is all fixed though and you are back on the road!

Likewise, my breakdown is only there to recover the car, i work on the basis that if i cant fix it at the side of the road, they wont either, so i just want it & me taken home where i can Helps that my breakdown has always taken my word on what the fault is, and will send me a recovery truck immediately, not the man in a van to tell me what i already know👍

I did get the AA to spend over an hour repairing the mx5, the top hose felt a bit brittle so I bought a set of silicone hoses and chucked them in the boot to fit one day. One saturday we are about 50 miles from home and it erupts into a ball of steam, turns out one of the heater hoses on the back of the engine had split, they are a completed pig to get too. Nice chap from AA turned up cheekily said I had the hoses and he volunteered to fit both the awkward heater hoses (the other one had to come off to get to the failed one), over an hour later all done, cost, I bought him a cake and coffee from costa. He said he actually enjoyed doing a proper job with new parts rather than the usual get you home fixes, flat batteries and punctures.
