I have been getting a lot of mail to my house for a Romanian sounding name , It's car insurance . I assume they intended to use the neighbouring property which has stood vacant for some time.
I assume
1. they are either taking out policies so they appear on the database, and then not paying installments until the policy is cancelled and then taking out another. 2. using my area to register cars as its in a cheaper , less risk area.
either way it's fraud and i have called the insurer about it, however they brushed it off saying it may be a genuine mistake (i'm sure it's not)
what I'm worried about is the thought of having debt collectors knocking , now I know I can explain the situation, but some of these debt collection agencies I've heard can be a bit sticky to deal with.
any thoughts other than calling the insurer again, and returning mail as not known at this address?
worth informing Mr plod ?

I'd return to sender as not known at this property.
Worked for me in different circumstances.

Hi, Try going onto one or more of the credit reference agencies like Equifax or Experian and ask them to put a 'note of disassociation' on the file for you and your address to stop debt recovery firms hassling you.

No point calling the police as there is no reported offence. Return to sender with not known at this address.
Get onto the credit reference people as said by colnerov , last thing you want is a CCJ against the address.

remember- Balliffs can knock but unless they come back a second time with a warrant there is no reason to let them in on the first time around.

I'm also getting car insurance renewal mails for some random person to my house.
I'm hoping they've just used my address to see if the area is cheaper than where they are but it's a bit annoying getting renewal junk mail for someone else.
Bit of investigating required I think.

We had it where someone had bought a video camera using our address to get credit but never paid, We rang the debt agency explained it was not us and that was it, until they sold the debt to another agency and we did the same again, went on 2 or 3 times until eventually it got written off, never got a balif or bad credit score though.

I've contacted the Insurance companies in question , some were much easier to deal with than others . Some are investigating, some have cancelled policies , and a couple are still investigating. Hopefuly thats the end of it , though a traffic infringement notice came through (could tell by the envelope and manipulating the window to see a bit of the letter inside.) would that address come from registered keeper as I've had no V5 through the door?

If that is a traffic ticket, (open it and find out) I'd take that to plod and see what they say about it all.

If you do the correct wording to use is I opened this in error after it was delivered to my address. Not I opened this which was addressed for someone else.

We got several thousand pounds worth of parking fines through the post for a owner name/vehicle that had never lived at our address. Took months to sort it out, ended up going and finding the car myself and errrr....making it known that I knew who they were.

Already returned as not known at this address - If I get a follow up to it, there's a good chance it may get opened in error. It's easily done if it comes through my door , I assume it's for me . If that is a traffic ticket, (open it and find out) I'd take that to plod and see what they say about it all.

I would have no qualms at all about opening letters sent to my address especially if i suspected fraud or other shenanigans going on. If it is delivered to your door by mistake and addressed elsewhere then that is a different story.
