Got a bmw 2.5 six pot out of a p38 here with loom ecu etc etc if youβre interested (and anywhere near norfolk, or willing to travel?) That has peaked my interest, let me do a bit of research on the engine and I'll drop you a PM. π IME the 2.5 TDS are not as frugal as many think. Compared to the M52s in the BMWs of the time, they were a little 'meh' IME. What MPG is your Jag seeing? Depending on the engine, it should see 30MPG on a run. With a 2.9, I understand that you can forget it in terms of MPG ; they are too little engine for the car.

It needs an engine swap cause that ones done 180k, rattles like hell and would need a rebuild ideally. I was toying with a 2jz but mpg isn't any better and if I'm going to the effort of an engine swap it would be nice to improve economy and power while I'm there! A diesel seems to fit the bill in principle especially as, at 1800kg the extra tourque would feel great and they seem to be easily mappable for extra power. That's my train of thought anyway π

Low 30s isn't too bad. A 2.5 I doubt would be much better and it would be a good chunk slower without some serious tuning, and probably back to similar MPG again... 180k is nothin on one of those, and Jag designed them for torque and MPG rather than outright speed, which has caught out a few tuners out there . Rattling can be down to the timing chain or more likely the valves ; they are shimmed from memory, which is a bit of a faff to do. The other thing is, because a diesel does mega MPG in a modern, doesn't mean it will do that in an older car. One of the biggest reasons cars have become more frugal is aerodynamics; that simply got better with time on cars, and naturally, it's not the easiest thing to change on a car . At 0.37cD, when the W124 of the day in base trim was 0.29, which became the benchmark for other cars, it will always be an interesting one to get more MPG out of . As an example, my Merc with 200BHP and being a brick does 16MPG no matter how you drive it. The M3 can do over 30 on a motorway with significantly more power . If you are doing it for more MPG don't kid yourself and be honest. If you are doing it because you want to be different, that's a different thing .

Hmm that's certainly something to think about. I want more power mainly but if I'm not gaining anything it leaves the whole thing a bit pointless. It certainly needs the top end shimming, it's down on power too having driven another lower mileage one. Perhaps I should start with a diet, as losing weight is the cheapest and fastest way to more speed and economy and there's plenty that can be easily lost. I was just quite impressed with my old pd engined Audi and thought I might be able to transfer similar power Vs economy to the Jag.

Why would you even want to? Go LPG and a turbo for less than diesel running costs and a better power to weight ratio!
Seriously look at the Medusa project to see what you can do with gas!

the Bmw M57 engine from 1998 inline 6 is something I've been looking at for my conversion but cant find much in the way of wiring it with the standard auto gearbox. Any one have any pointers on how its done please en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M57
