Right then this is going to truly put the cat amongst the pigeons i would think but need thought's from others. Some of you will have seen i am selling my baby (avenger), the reasons and the whathaves are far to complicated however i am planning on having a car which will cover daily duties as well as show's. Would many of you agree that show snobbery exists as to say a modern car styled as a sled or a custom will not be seen as that as it is not what people are used to or would you guy's try to see reason in a style? Think why is a modern with hydro's cool yet if slammed and same style maybe not?

as it is not what people are used to I always like to see something different, I think most here would feel the same

I dare say you'd experience a lot of snobbery. That's why Retro-Rides is so popular though - you can be sure that there will be fans on here whatever it is. I think doing a "modern" is a lot harder to pull off, because there are so many preconceptions you have to fight through. To pull it off it has to be really spot-on IMHO, and modern shapes sometimes don't support traditional modding styles. I always think Euro or VIP looks damn good on 90's and 00's cars, whereas something like a sled has a high chance of looking curse word. But done right, I think it can look great! What ideas have you got?

It definately exists on every level. Wherever you see a show, you will see those looking down on the cars on display - wrong year, wrong colour, wrong engine..... the concours cars will be too well finished, the daily driver cars will be too well used.
You'll probably not find it on this forum though, or the associated show! Show me something that I've not seen before, I'm sick of euro look mk2 Golfs and bubble-arches escorts. Show me a Vectra wagon with two-tone paint and moon discs. Show me a Mk1 Fiesta on wires. I want to see a Sierra with a roofchop.
To be honest it usually affects single-marque shows as these have the highest level of anoraks who think they know everything. I only really have experience with VW shows but the first time I heard someone comment a car should be thrown out of the concours section for having the registration number etched into the windows..... well. I thought it was a wind-up.

Gone through some serious life stuff and need to get back out and want to do it my way (shoot max bygrave's moment)
Been thinking about either a 124 series merc coupe tastefully lowered in deep red with a black roof section and red candy over it on either solid rims or posibly something a bit interestin detail wise but easy to maintain, of merc estate in similar style although would love a 123 estate( did what i recon to be the first v8 in zeb the low one years ago) as the shape lends itself very well to the old skool styles. ;D ;D

I think there's some confusion here between snobbery and opinions. If a majority think your cas is pap that doesn't make them snobs, it just means you only appeal a minority and in the majorities opinion is against it. Nobody has to like your car. There's lots of styles I don't like but it doesn't make me a snob.
As for a car not qualifying for concours because of etched window... well, I hate to say it but they're probably right. Doesn't make 'em snobs either. It's just another opinion.
When it comes to matters of taste with regard to modifying cars, there are no rules. There are things that the majority of people wouldn't like and if that bothers you then don't do it. Just because YOU like something doesn't mean everyone else has to so it's unreasonable to expect them to.

I don't have a problem with people doing whatever they like to their cars. I either like it or I don't. If I don't, I'm not about to tell them they're wrong. They're only wrong if they expect everyone to like it.
I've owned/built cars that I know won't be to everyones taste. Ten years ago just owning a Datsun was pretty much against everyone elses taste but it didn't stop me. I like my cars and that's really all that matters. If you build something you're happy with then job's a good 'un. You have to ask yourself who you are building a car for. You or everyone else?
I will defend anyones right to an opinion though. If someone does like my car it's fine by me. Some people are particularly tactless when expressing their opinions but that's life. You just have to accept that and not let it phase you.

All these words are making some very good sense. Guess i have the opinion that i don't much like modern cars covered in body kit but i can still appreciate how much work and time has gone into it even if i don't understand why.

Phatford's scorpio was a great example of a car that in principle should be unpopular with no fans, but it worked so well that no one gave a wibblepoo what it was or started out as. It was a fairly simple concept as well IIRC (air, wires, whitewalls, 2 tone metallic).

My merc has already been slated by half me mates and random passers by while i been doing stuff to it in the street, I'm not even gonna bother explaining half the reason i bought it is cos it looks manky.
Just do what you want, some of us wont like and some will, same as at shows.
