I have a now almost perfect mk2 golf as a daily and a '77 924 for play but a mk2 caddy has come up locally quite cheap and I'm trying not to buy it! It's a 2003 1.9sdi so not the best engine but it's already lowered and with a bit of work could be pretty cool. What are the things to look out for on these? I've already bookmarked loads of bits for it so in my head I guess I've already bought it. Going to see it tonight.

Get the Skoda Felicia instead. It's like the VW, just lots cheaper, and all your mods will still apply and look cool. Spend VW money on a Skoda and you'll get a really nice one to start with and you can always swap the badges to VW ones if you want to get into more shows.

This is a caddy van, like the Seat Inca. Just back from viewing its cosmetically a bit rough, nothing too bad tho. Mechanically seems OK, few niggles. Pending an insurance quote I may have a go. Shortest thread ever, you failed to talk me out of it.

I had a MK2 Caddy TDI. The most reliable and economic thing I have ever owned. Carry a spare 109 relay (fuel pump relay) as they're a common fault.
Fronts are easy to drop, MK2 golf units. I got mine off of here for £20. Rear beam just swap the saddle seats over. You need to have adjusters on the back because a flipped axle is far too low, you'll bottom out on everything. In the end I VR6 swapped mine, bought a MK3 golf and just swapped the whole front clip over. MK3 golf headed leathers out of the MK3 also fit.
They're surprisingly roomy as well. I cut the above VR6 up, pulled it apart and managed to fit the whole lot in the back of the caddy!
The rear adjuster brackets are also helpful for carrying heavy loads. I used to stick a jack under the towbar, lift the back up, adjust the brackets into their highest setting and then load the back full of junk!

I loved my little sdi, it was great fun. Cost me £40 to lower it and £50 for some alloys. Watch for water ingress on the ecu. If it's fine atm, clean the skuttle tray out really well and put a cover over the ecu. Somewhere on my readers ride thread is what I did with mine. Thanks for the advice everyone. The guy has decided he wants to keep it annoyingly as I got a cheap insurance quote too. I'm off to shake the gumtree for another now!

Actually I just remembered, I have had 2! one TDi one SDi. Again lowered, but if I remember correctly I kept having starting problems with the SDi, got short tempered and sold it.

I had 3 Sdi Incas, 2 old ones and then a 52 plate that I loved I also had, for a short period, a Tdi caddy The tdi was really quick compared to the sdi, but I’d have another sdi even now.... if they carried a bit more weight. Sorry, I mean they are rubbish... don’t get one

I'm seriously thinking about a little van for my next daily driver, but the one thing that's put me off is that I don't think I can take them into my local council tip without a permit. One was behind me in the queue today and the driver got a proper grilling from the chap on the gate. He did get in but I saw paperwork being shown.

I'm sure it varies around the country but in our neck of the woods to enter with a van you have to buy a book of vouchers to use the tip and you can only go so many times a year. same applies if your trailer is 6'x4'....thats why mine is 5'x3'! swmbo's old bongo was great for tip runs as it was reg'd as a car. scr€w you mr tip nazi!!!!

Can’t take any vans, pickups or 4x4s to ours at all now. So I have to have an extra car just for going to the tip as I usually have a pickup or a van as a daily 🙄
