Hello
I’m mid way though rebuilding the top end on my BOA cosworth V6, as with everything, you do one bit, then the another, then an unintentional bit, before long, you think “I may as well....” This is where I’m at currently! I’d like to replace the camshaft followers, visibly there’s no obvious wear, but, it’s been stood a long while, I’ve everything in bits (actually ready to rebuild but this is now nagging me and holding me up!) & I hate tappet noise!! So, replacing them is on my mind..
Nobody lists them, one tuner has stated you can use none O/E followers but it was years ago he himself did this, and has forgotten what they were from..
YB cosworth followers look the same from pictures, but spending £150+ to find they are not the same isn’t an option..
Vag followers also look the same, and actually externally measure the same as I have some kicking around.. but, bolting it all up to find I’ve not taken something into consideration doesn’t sit well... at all
Has anybody any info, experience, knowledge on cam followers, cosworth V6’s that could please help😎

Hi, Yes, they list the YB followers but can not confirm they will work.. that’s pretty much across the board with any tuners or performance parts suppliers

My son is currently trying to fit one of these to his Capri, or he will be if he ever manages to finish the welding on it. When we were at classic ford earlier this year someone recommended boost performance in northants ares to us, we’ve not tried them so no idea what they’re like, but may be worth a google/ call?

Phone round local engine places and find somebody that has a pump for stripping followers (looks like a grease gun but has tight fitting round ends that you put the follower in then by pumping it up it forces the centre out) then get the old ones stripped and cleaned. Any knackered ones will show up straight away.

a good old thwack on a piece of wood should get the piston out, give it a thorough clean, bit of oil and re-assemble. you can also dress the top surface that touches the camshaft. www.taylor-eng.com/16v_head/16v_head.htm have a read from half way, its specific to the Peugeot MI16 engine, but these things really don't vary a great deal.

BOA or BOB? As the BOA in my mk2 Granada had the whole load of followers replaced when it was rebuilt 80 odd thousand miles ago. And they were replaced with...Cosworth YB followers from my friend who at the time was at Pipers cams I'm not sure if the architecture of the BOB valve train is the same as BOA tho

Thank you mk2cossie 😎😎 you’ve just confirmed what I thought😊
I’d seen single lifter/follower for a YB on eBay for £8, brought one, it arrived today! Looks identical, but I’ve not got them side by side, I’m going to pop one out of my BOA this evening and just triple check.. on a slight side note, I happen to have some followers from a VAG motor knocking about, (2.3 five cylinder, but they are also the same as Four cylinders both petrol and diesel) they are identical! In every way, these are also available as hardened etc, so I may go that route, lots of reading on tinterwebs informs me that aftermarket followers tend to show stress cracks on the topside after a few thousand miles, the hardened versions are for VAG PD engines..
I’ll report back once I’ve had time to check them all against each other😎

Be careful using (extra) hardened buckets - can just wear the cam instead. VW PD's suffer from an issue where the cam wears through the top of the buckets but that's pretty much the only engine that does it hence why harder buckets are available (most aftermarket OEM spec are now extra hard coated and appear dark compared to silver as normal). I'm not even sure anybody actually knows what causes them to do it, combination of things probably as it's not something that can be avoided by regular servicing/correct oil etc.
Stock Ford ones will be fine in your engine.

Thank you stealthstyles, I hadn’t thought about cam lobe wear, I just thought that it would aid in reducing the fatigue the top surface can suffer.. it would seem that most aftermarket followers are now heat treated at least on the surface that the lobes run on.. Here’s a comparison Top - new aftermarket YB follower, (from burton) it has been hardened in the top surface.. Middle - new VAG follower, from what I can make out it’s also been hardened, but not as heavy.. Bottom - one of the old followers from my BOA engine.. You can see they’re slightly different on the underside, the YB & VAG followers are identical, the standard BOA being different.. This is the bit that concerns me a little tho, the feed/opening for the oil way, on the previous two it’s a simple hole, on the BOA you can see it’s a different shape, although they all measure up identical, (in virtually every way!!) I’m still not over confident... Thank you for all the reply’s and ideas people 😎😎😬 Any other info advice is greatly appreciated

Forgot to post - I had a word with the guy who does the heads at work. Apparently YB followers were what he used in the Cossie V6's (when they were current) but he has also used the VW hardened ones more recently and they were fine.

Not that i'm trying to direct away from RR, but if you want know about BOA/BOB's then the ford power forum is a very useful resource.
