I've been having quite rich pickings at the tip recently and about a month ago spyed this in the scrap metal bin. I know your not supposed to take things from the tip but shhhh! It's too good to be scrapped. Its an Atco Deluxe 17" cut self-propelled cylinder mower. I have no idea how old it is, maybe 80s? The fuel tank was full of rust so first. Job was to remove that and fill it with acid vinegar. But not before trying to get it running on brake cleaner!

Well it runs and revs it's nuts off when it does. After leaving the tank to pickle overnight it came up completely rust free inside. Shamefully I didn't get a pic so you'll just have to imagine a pristine tank. I fitted new fuel line and an inline filter and filled with fresh petrol. Couldn't get it started for the life of me. The pull starter was playing up and not retracting either. I couldn't get a spark so thought the points must be furred up or something. On inspection it turns out it has brand new magneto, points, plug and oil. It's had a service recently, somebody had tried to get it going and then tipped it. So cleaned and regapped the points just incase, cleaned and gapped the plug, oiled the starter and reassembled. No start. Tried on brake cleaner and it fired up immediately, idled poorly and died. Wouldn't restart on just petrol. Carb rebuild time It's a little zenith 13. The smallest carb I've ever worked on but essentially it works like a tiny single draught weber. Before Cleaned it up in diesel and discovered the slow running jet was blocked. £7.99 for a new one and a few more pennies on gaskets it was back together More soon

Last week I got the carb refitted and without any adjustments at all it ran like this
I hadn't fitted the throttle linkage at that point so just revved by hand.
It wasn't all good news though as on releasing the cutter clutch, the blades don't spin and the engine stalls.
But I ran out of time so had to leave it for the day

Got home from work today with daylight left to play with ahem, fix the Atco. First off I fitted the throttle mech. It was fitted wrong when I got it, causing the engine to rev its nuts off. Correctly fitted it was just a case of fettling the idle and mixture.
Then had a look at why the blades where stuck and quickly found a rock wedged in it. Rock removed and we have action!

Cracking find and nice work on it.
Fairly sure I used to cut the grass at home as a young lad with something very similar

At full throttle this thing is bloody quick!
Mower now named Fenton and yes my neighbours give me weird looks.
And that is probably about as far as I'm going to go with this one. Love the patina so I've gone over it with an oily rag. I've seen you can get the decals for it on ebay so I might splash out and get a set.
As mentioned earlier, the old woman has been wanting one for years so I'm on the lookout for another. If you know of any going cheap in the Lincolnshire area give me a shout, doesn't have to be an Atco and I'll document the repairs on here.
Cheers for looking in!

Having got the atco going I got a message from tigerfox asking if I wanted another. So today I became the owner of atco no.2. The same as the first but with a 20" cut. Thanks Nick and it was nice to meet you! It looks in better kick than the last one and the blades have been sharpened as well. Will try and get it running as soon as its not raining, which might be next year, but I might rebuild the carb as a precaution. He also had an old broken clarke tool box he wasn't using and some tins of red paint. All useful stuff!

I'm not sure how old it is or even if it's interesting to anyone but it needs repair and I need a toolbox The turned out to be that some of the pressings that hold the runners on the draws had cracked and bent. Bent back into shape and reinforced with a blob of weld. I'll put the big drawer in the top slot to avoid using the second row down as it's knackered. It turns out that fiat swift red is a pretty close match so cleaned it up and gave it a quick respray. And found this little note under the matting in the big drawer "I have inspected this product with care and hope that you will have years of use from it. C. Ferrel" Let's hope so!

Amongst my more recent finds at the tip were some huge 70s/80s speakers. 4 of the things and just about fit them in the car Huge! I'm not sure if any of you are into old hifi equipment but I inherited this old technics amp off my grandad years ago and have always kept hold of it. Its not a particularly good one, it's only a midi hifi receiver but I always thought it sounded good. Anyway it used to have the matching speakers but while it was being stored aty parents house in their loft, mum decided to bin them. So I've been using these terrible Sony speakers instead, real prices of junk And the technics receiver in question, along with swmbo's camera but that's another story Now I know these speakers are far far to big to be powered by my little amp but sod it, the Sony speakers where going to the tip. Whilst the cat was away I snuck two of the better speakers I to the living room and connected them up Jesus christ these are loud! Shake the windows loud So I've recently acquired a second hand rega planar record player to go with it. I've even fixed the tape player and bought a couple of tapes. Swmbo is still furious about the ugly speakers in the living room though so they'll probably be banished to garage use in the new house. I'll have to get myself a "garage" amp

What are the speakers?
Their size doesnt make them harder for a small amp to drive, its all aboit sensitivity and big drivers, especially older paper drivers, tend to be more sensitive. Thats why they are loud too.
What are the controls? Slope and filter?

Not a Rega owner but that sounds like a cool job. I've got an early Pink Triangle PT1 that really needs some love and attention, a winter project is to get an analog system up and running.
