Last night, after procrastinating for 4 months about taking the engine out on the 900 turbo, Rather than me doing commentry on 'love island' ("The colour has gone on the telly, nobody is that shade of orange' & 'someone has definitely punched her in the mouth' or 'dead heat in a zeppelin race that one) along with other words I cannot repeat ... after a couple of beers I just got my harris into gear and 3hrs later : I gotta degrease this. 275,000 miles worth of gunk Now in the past I just grabbed a pressure washer and some degreaser and got down to work, not even considering the right mess of the backyard I made with oily gunk everywhere and me totally covered in oily grit. I now have a powerful steamer and a pressure washer, but can't figure out the cleanest way to do it, and apparently all the degreasers there are these days are no better than washing up liquid. Are decent degreasers available or is that something resigned to history like leaded solder and two pack paint? I was thinking of a cheapo paddling pool and dangling the engine above it so I catch the residue - Has anyone got any other ideas?

Thinners or petrol will make short work of the grease, spray on work in with a brush then blast off, just remember to wash the floor down after.

Yeah that's what I'd do, but I usually stick a load of old cardboard underneath it on a plastic sheet, then when you're done you can just roll the whole thing up and bin it

3-in-1 degreaser is good but I find it doesnt last long, probably not cost effective for a whole engine.

Personally I found the screwfix no-nonsense degreaser utterly useless. After 2 or 3 goes with it I gave up and just ended up using petrol and a final blast off with the pressure washer.
As mentioned I just chuck some cardboard down then roll it up and bin it afterwards.

Diesel - gets flippin everywhere - just like you want it too! Brush/spray/dunk - Also much less risk of death by blazing inferno... Fails a bit on the "not smelly" requirement though,,

When i used to race dirtbikes I always degreased with airfilter cleaner. Epic stuff , but way more expensive than diesel and brakecleaner.

Rock Oil - SOC or Manista Hyperclean
Both water soluble degreasers, both work, I have a feeling SOC might be paraffin based.

This stuff. Dr Magic Oven cleaner. It foams up when you spray it. Leave it on for a while then blast off with the jet washer. Brilliant stuff and usually very cheap

Just be careful with oven cleaners as they can eat aluminium alloys. Diesel works but smelly and a curse word to clean up the work area afterwards Bilt-Hamber do a good degreaser , can be used diluted or as is and its kind to Polar bears www.bilthamber.com/car-cleaning-and-degreasing/surfex-hd

I cleaned my engine at the weekend before installing it, and used brake cleaner followed by good old fairy liquid.
