So, last month I turned 50. I have three kids. Actually one "kid" just turned 18 and is now learning to drive. And the middle on is 14, taking engineering at BTEC and has changed the starter motor on the Multipla and also done the brakes. Oh, and he's helping me rebuild an engine. IMG_20190707_204012527 by Graham Miller, on Flickr Anyway, while The WIfe is in London with the terminally boring Japanese car (so dull I won't name it) this is what the drive looks like. Both just about scrape under the Retro Rides barrier. Yes they have computers and ODB-II but you can still get the spanners out and get some oil under your fingernails if you want to. Graham

My Son is about to turn 14 - I wish I could persuade him to do some work on cars. You're lucky to have such a helper.

Yeah, it's like spread betting to increase the odds of one being mechanical. I have three kids, middlest is only really happy with a spanner or screwdriver in his hand, eldest likes driving and expects his brother to fix it and the youngest does help sometimes, mainly to be like his brothers!

52. Two daughters. Who both drive and that's the limit of their interest in cars. If it starts and goes its great.
Hey ho. Maybe the grandsons will be car nuts.

I'm 53. My five children are aged 13 to 25. Miss 17 recently got my Falcon sideways on a gravel road then launched it into the playing field of our local primary school. Just as well it was a Sunday or it could have been a lot more serious than it was.

Well, that was surprising. Took the Micra on the regular school run. Waiting to turn left onto a busy main road and I get let out. By an R8. An Audi supercar. And it waited and let me out in my slightly shabby Micra.
Made my day!

My eldest is just 14 , in two weeks time she leaves the conventional main stream academy type school and in September joins the local engineering college !
Not sure where she will end up or doing what but I’ve has to buy new locks for the man cave and hide the keys !
Otherwise she would be using my tools to strip her bike or the cars

I'm 54 and have a son of, almost, 34 and a daughter of 27. My boy has never had any interest with cars, just tools to do a job really, but my girly has. She has no problem helping spannering and doing stuff if I need any help. She would be happy to be rolling in a nice old car, she prefers them to modern stuff. Nice to see a good collection of oldies on here!😊

I'm 39, two sons aged 16 and 12. Eldest loves hot hatches and smokey old Jags and is planning to do motorsport engineering at uni.
Youngest loves changing gears in my work van and revving engines.
I feel I've done alright.

51 & junior is 14. he likes cars but has minimal mechanical aptitude (unless its his skateboard) , i think that gene has skipped a generation! i hope his interest will grow along with the need to be mobile and run a car for himself.

A little surprised at the age of a lot of members on here - at 60 I thought I was much older than most. You are right about the next generation - to my daughter and son-in-law cars and vans are for hiring out to customers and the interest stops there. I'm trying to push my twin 5 year old grandsons in the right direction though . If this hobby is to have a future in the face of ever restrictive legislation we need to get the youngsters interested NOW.

I'm now 65, my 5 kids are grown up and some have kids of their own. Only my eldest son showed any interest in classics or retro-mods, his first car after a couple of modern-ish motorbikes was a 1972 Triumph 2000. But reality and galloping tinworm caught up with that and he now has a boringly reliable 4 door Civic.
There is some hope for my twin grandsons however, their dad, my son in law, is also a petrolhead with an E46M3 and they are both car mad. Since they are only 3 and a half it's questionable whether anything will come of it though, by the time they are driving, there won't be any cars WORTH driving!

On a slight tangent and more of an open question to the more mature posters here. Knee pain - is this just what happens when you start getting on? I'm 33 now, I was really fat as a kid and a teen which certainly didn't help matters but I'm pretty slim these days and plenty active. If I sit down for more than a few minutes with my knees bent at any sort of angle (riding a motorcycle is a good example and one of the many reasons I got shot of my old Triumph Sprint ), when I come to move my legs again, my knees have gone stiff and hurt like green curse word to get going again. Is this just what happens?

Nah, i wouldn't say so at your age but most likely something that could be treated in some way, medically or physiologically
Best discussing symptoms with your gp.
Plenty of supplements recommended for joint care too 👍
