I have been rebuilding my Hill Climb special saloon for a few years now and was going to fit a Turbo Super Bike engine. I started to think about running it with an Electric motor and had a price that used a Tesla motor but to be honest it was stupidly high...I could have built 3 turbo bike engines for the same cost. As i was an Electrician years ago I can do a lot of the work myself but I'm not sure of the best motors batteries and control gear etc. I'm looking at around the 300+ bhp ( its a very small light car) and still using a chain drive so I can adjust the gearing to suit...( its just for fine tuning) Plus if it could run say 6 to 10 miles thats all the power needed for a Hilll Climb meeting..so keeps the batteries needed smaller/lighter The car is already quiet unique ( its based on a 1963 car) so I know it would get a lot of interest when it competes..as it did before. Any ideas who might be interested or who could help ?

Funny you should mention this as (having entered a few hillclimbs this year) I’m seeing “ No electric vehicles or hybrids” in the SRs..
Check you can actually run it first at your chosen venue(s)...

I understand what you mean but I have been racing since 1985 and although even a few years ago it would have been frowned upon places like Shelsley now have EV records.. It would be nice to race an old car with new electrical power and hopefully make it future proof for as long as I will be racing.. Plus will have a chance of setting records too boot. If i could get a company who would go joint on the development I'm sure it could be very successful for us both. As i said i don't mind doing the fitting into the space frame and wiring, I just need to know what best parts to use, one thing i do know is it will have to be AC as the DC motors don't have regeneration and thus no motor braking with could be a bit scary to say the least..

Shesley is one that's OK with EVs - I think Prescott might too, but I gather they like to do things their own way...

Neither Prescott nor Shelsley allow EVs (nor any other UK hill AFAIK) and they’re specifically banned in the SRs - they can’t meet the regs required (I think they need an airfield type fire engine amongst other stuff!)
Of course, if Jaguar call and say “can we give you loads of free publicity by taking a prototype EV up your hill?” Their risk assessment may be temporarily tweaked 😀
Having said that, I’d love to build a sprint/hillclimb electric retro 😀

Shelsley = Electric Car Record.
Mitch Evans, Jaguar I-TYPE 2 Formula E, 30.46 seconds, 12.8.18 I think he beat the old record by around 6.8 seconds..
I have seen Tesla's and various other EV cars running on the hill in events over the past few years.. I agree mostly in demo's but not all. Plus i don't mind if I'm not in a class as such.
Look what holds the record in Pikes Peak. Plus there are a few at Goodwood. They cant hold them back much longer as that's the way its going to go, plus to be honest not many people understand the cars yet, most think they will bust into flames in a crash but actually the most dangerous time is charging them...

I don’t think they’re “holding them back”, they genuinely can’t meet the safety requirements yet. I don’t believe there have been any EV classes run yet - only individual demos/special invites.

As i said seen a few over the years, an electric westfield, Tezla's, the Formula E car was not a demo as it had a time and record Demos don't get timed. Yes no official class but they do run.. Rally X is moving to electric in 2021. I'm not going to have it ready for at least 18 months

Once you answer your question let me know.. I think its the million dollar question really isnt it. 'Where do I get the bits to bolt in my car to make it go fast on electric power..' I don't think the answer is out there yet at an affordable off the shelf kind of price. You can spend a fair bit on batteries and motors from old volts or teslas but controlling them seems to be an issue still unless your a electronics and programming genius. The day theres an affordable bolt in 'kit' like we have for ECUs nowerdays is the day people will start getting into electric cars proper!

More the answer to Slaters question than the original question But this ls intriguing Selling for ~8000USD without batteries isn't cheap, but comparable with a new internal combustion engine, with injection and ecus etc ? EV West conversion for MR2 + others

Have any of you seen the Irish Fella on you tube called Damien Maguire on youtube that has done lots of EV conversions on normal VW's some great tips on there! the videos are long and he is quite monotone but by god he has some ingenuity. Might come in handy for some of you looking at converting. Early vids show where he has sourced stuff too.

Many thanks will look him up as well...(i just found his vids )
I was going to buy a Tesla engine as the price was not to bad but as you said the costs of the batteries, chargers and control gear almost tripled the costs.
Its like all new technologies very expensive when new they drops considerably over the years. But would be nice to be involved now as things get going.
I don't mind spending time or money in the future developing it as that's part of the fun, its the getting doing in the first place is the tricky part..
I really appreciate all your help and advice and will report back ASAP..
