Been considering my next project, and keep finding myself finding dirt cheap 1.8T BAM-engined Audi TTs...with a remap you're looking at a sub-6 second car for a couple of grand
However they're just not brilliant driver's cars...a bit heavy and uninspiring. Is there anything else that offers similar performance for peanuts?

I loved my BAM 225. I thought it was fantastic. Regular servicing aid nothing overly drastic and I gave it to my good friend at 216k. Still going now.
However there’s a lot on them that can go very wrong!
R53 supercharged minis are a lot of car for the money now I think. I’ve had mine coming up for 3 years now and it’s great!
Unfortunately I can’t contribute more than that at the moment. 225 TTs are great cars if you get a good one.

Not retro yet but Mazda 6 Mps. I'm sure they have 500 a year tax but a remap will easily run sub 6 seconds to 60 in (cheap plastic) comfort.

Saab 9-5 HOT? sub 7 sec for the standing 60 out of the box. Sensible car when you need it to be, Screamer when you don't Later autos get hammered for tax

I'm giving some thought to the Mini...with a smaller pulley they can make some sweet gains, and they are plentiful...

I was going to suggest 9-5 aero as well, the 2.8 V6 turbo 9-3's can be blisteringly quick for little money, I'd like a sportwagen but they hold their value.

Any Saab with a turbo. Remaps are cheap (under £100) and effective.

Just recently sold my BAM TT after 7 years of ownership and 100k done in that time.
Great cars, even at the age they are now they feel special.
Advice would be find a good one, a bad example will cost a lot of money very quickly...

Look at Mk1 Seat Leon Cupra R's, cheap and came with AMK 210bhp and later the BAM 225bhp. Both can be remapped to the same. Mine is a 2003 AMK 210 and at stage 1 has 260bhp. Bloody marvellous car, fast and handles well, and can be made better very easily.
Watch out for shot PCV systems so use a catch can instead, leaky doors (easy fix with butyl tape) whiney gearboxes. The later type can be fixed with a £15 shim kit in minutes. Early ones like mine cant do that but the whine is slight.
Rods are only good for 300ft/lb torque though.

Had an early LCR with a BAM - great engine but it was heavy and had quite a few niggles over my ownership. Absolutely gorgeous car tho. I think I may have found a TT that I like but it's pushing 150k...lots of history tho, so should I be worried?

I maintained it myself and it got whatever it needed, no issues at all and the new owner is made up with it.
