We need a diesel car.
I want it to be retro and cool.
Mrs VT wants it to be frugal and reliable.
Anyone got any suggestions?

My mum had a 106 straight diesel once. Wouldn't win any kind of race but it was crazy economical and just kept on motoring. Whether it falls into "retro" territory yet may be arguable, but personally I'd say they are pretty much there now.

My daily is an '03 Clio mk2, def not retro, nor cool, but it does 65 mpg Ave. Since my commute is 130 that's why I use it. The 80hp is the best, gave me 67-68, the 100hp I have now, is a solid 65mpg @ 60 ish.
First was a 65hp, scrapped at 235K, rear beam was going.
This one's done 130K, 40 odd by me, it'll do a few years yet.

My friend was given a Pug 309 diesel as a company hack in 2001. It was an ex-taxi, and although the speedo had clocked over the 100k mark (it only had 5 digits), we both reckon it had done 2 or possibly 3 times that. Aside from a few clunks, it was utterly dependable and never went wrong despite many attempts to destroy it. Plenty of space and although slow, once up to speed it'd happily sit at 70 all day whilst returning 50mpg. His commute was 45 miles each way every day. Plus it cost about Ā£200.
The only issue these days would be finding one.

Mk3 fiesta diesel the 1.8 engine is quite big for a small car so performance is ok and it will return 55mpg
Had loads great little cars your biggest problem will be finding a good one
Bit newer mk4 golf TDI probably the best most reliable diesel made to date
The French made good diesels around the 80s/90s so I've been told

What about a Lupo TDI?  Neve owned one pesonally but 60+ mpg sounds appealing! Or my friend had a Mk1 Seat Leon PD130 which had 180K on it but pulled like a train and still returned 50mpg!  |

I've had a 306 D Turbo for the last 9 years. It's probaly the 'best' car I have ever had, in that it's reliable, comfortable, practical (decent boot, hatchback), fun to drive (in a 90hp, chuck it about sort of way), I have had cars that do some of this stuff better, but not all at the same time. 55+ mpg on a run, 45 around town or on the lanes with a lead foot. Get one with a Bosch pump for 70ppl veggie oil frugality. Retro? maybe, mine is 21 this year, the phase 1s look cooler/older IMO, but harder to find.  |

Get something thats fairly simple . Moderner stuff with DPFs egrs and swirl flaps is a pain in the backside and liable to leave you crying .

 Well,it's a diesel,carries 6,has easily removable rear seats and does 44mpg. Jury's out on the retro front but I think mines a cool car, especially when parked up with all the dull moderns in my works carpark.š |

i agree with the 306 diesel , xud tunes up easy and the hdi version goes better with a chip , not good to me due to londons ulez

I would say don't be put off something cheap that has done lots of miles . It will obviously have had lots done to it to get there , and means you can shell out on a service cambelt and waterpump etc with the money you save to give yourself piece of mind .

  I ran a ZX diesel estate for a few years.It won't set your world alight but was a reliable old bus that did late 40's mpg and was quite a comfortable place to be. |
