This always makes me laugh. You take a gamble and if you win- great, if you lose, you swallow it and pay the price. It’s no secret - if you know about Worthersee, you know this has been going on for years. You get people moaning about how heavy handed the Austrian police are, then see videos of people sitting on their rev limiters, doing rolling burnouts/launches etc down Velden High Street* where the locals are out riding their bikes, doing their shopping etc. and people wonder why they are trying to get it stopped. I got lost looking for a motor factors in Klagenfurt, flagged down a police car and asked them (in English obviously like the true ignorant Englishman I am) for help, they gesticulated directions, drew me a little map and in the end laughed and said “Follow” where they guided me where I needed to go. This all took place at a set of traffic lights which were just cycling with traffic building up behind and in this car. Maybe it’s because I’m old/polite or I was just lucky but they were good as gold with me and I’ve never had an issue over there. *I'm not sure if Velden has a High Street but you get the idea

Yeah I'm not for one minute suggesting that they weren't asking for trouble by driving with ridiculous stretched tyres etc.
I would have had a spare set of wheels for going there and back. The camber they are running may well have worn the tyres down just travelling there!!

I realise RR has a positivity thing, but that if clown with the green Merc actually has a wheel arch that runs between the tyre and the rim (as appears in the pics) then I'd rather he ended up in Midnight Express being regularly bumtrafficked by hairy-backed Turks* than politely told off by civilised Germans and is then released back into the wild with his disgustingly curse word car
As for all this nonsense about ze Germans making "us" conform with their TUV laws... well, we have to conform to our own MOT laws too but that doesn't mean your car is guaranteed road-legal for an entire year. If you choose to modify it in some downright bloody stupid fashion then you break that legal agreement that allows you to operate your vehicle on the road. Jeez, think of the nuns and kittens that might die. But if you choose to do it and run the risk, don't cry like a biatch if someone with more sense (and authority) inconveniently points out to you how very silly you're being
*other unpleasant prison scenarios are available

Its a bit like people who decide to do burnouts when leaving a cruise/car show whatever. So many do it that it almost seems to be the norm in some circles (see various youtube videos for example). When leaving these shows, sideways, on a public road near members of the general public, mabie its me getting old, thinking the way I am, but I watch them just waiting for something bad to happen. Of course I don't want something bad to happen, but neither do the police, but when they turn up its like someone spoiled the fun, and so be it.
There was a pic of a car transporter loaded up with cars. Is this the new way of getting cars to shows that have slightly iffy mods, effectively rendering them trailer queens?

Ohhhhkay.... But anyway they don’t run like that, it’s how it sits when it’s aired out

For the hard of thinking in the audience, it's called "hyperbole"... exaggeration for effect I am, however, wishing that idiots like that aren't allowed to drive such stupidly modified vehicles on public roads and expressing a vague feeling that the German police are probably being lenient on him by letting him have that hideous abortion back. Ultimately though, I don't care especially beyond slight motivation to type a few lines on a forum. There are too many utter fools in the world for me to get upset by all of them, I just don't have the time

The simple answer to all this is to do your homework. If you don't, you *might* get into trouble. These guys did.
We all like different things but we all like cars. I don't like the type of vehicle myself (I just don't "get" the whole as low as you can go and camber thing), but if it floats your boat, then great. Just don't expect to be surprised if law enforcement in a different country is unimpressed by your wicked stance. They took a chance, gambled big and lost the pot. Many cars are modified to draw attention to them. It's like being at school - if you didn't read the book and get asked questions about it in class, you're going to look a bit silly.
Most people who go to the Nurburgring don't take a trailer in case they crash, or enough money to get recovered/repair the Armco. But if you do crash, it's BIG bucks. All a gamble. Personally I would prefer to be covered. But that does cost a lot of money, and I can see both sides of the argument.
These guys were young-ish and probably thought they could get away with it.

I'm with rattlecan here. If you do silly things and play silly games, you'll get silly results. Are people seriously saying that the Merc driving on the autobahns with his wheels rubbing on the arch all of the time in addiion to the rim was fine? We'd pull them over here, but how many coppers do you see on the road, let along the streets these days? The square root of nada .

Chas it doesn’t run like that, it’s on air and that’s how it sits when it’s parked. Not everyone’s cup of tea granted, not really mine, but one mans poison and all that and I’ve seen stuff on here that people toss themselves raw over that makes me cringe.

This shot was taken with the car parked... That looks fine. I'm sorry, but he was asking for trouble as far as that shot is concerned. Next you'll be saying the black marks and tyre sidewalls being worn are just a coincidence... I agree that modifying cars should be defended, but with great power also comes great responsibility, which, let's be honest, recent law changes (MOT exemption etc.) have put us more under the spotlight in that regard.

From what I can see in those photos, if vosa had pulled them this side of the channel they'd of gotten a similar treatment. People saying that this is German police trying to enforce German rules on foreign cars that are legal to drive in their mother land seems to be ignoring the fact that these cars probably ain't legal to drive in their motherland either.
If you play with feathers you have to expect to get your ass tickled.

That Merc looked dangerous with that tyre stretch + how much tyre rubber on the arch?!
As has been said, the Belgian boys knew what to do.

Just had a chat with our TüV guy who works for TüV Rheinland He said what normally happens in cases like this is they check if the car is legal to drive in it's current state in the country it is from. The worst case for these lads is that VOSA/DVLA, on hand from the photos of the cars, can say that they are also illegal in UK (which in the case of the Mercedes would be pretty simple) that would mean they have to be recovered at the cost of the owner from Germany to England where (best case) the owner has to put it to a roadworthy standard and present it to VOSA at a testing centre. Or they get siezed and scrapped.
From the photos the company that collected them are based 5 minutes walk from my flat. I think I will go over this evening on my way home and see if any of the lads there can help out (one of them drives a MK2 gti in Air) if anyone has contact to the owners feel free to point them my way and I can try and help them out.
I understand that the modifications are daft but we have all played that game at some point. For me it was a very expensive one!

The green merc owner tends to run risks with builds, I don't know the back story behind it but the tyre on the car he showed at ultimate stance - brown toyota tercel - was completely popped off the rim - I don't know whether this happened on the road or at the show itself. During the tat auction on saturday night Kev said they should have come to the weekender instead, ironically they did in 2018... candyshowroom.co.uk/blog/retro-rides-2018/I'm just glad that we're commenting on arrests caused by modifications rather than deaths. I don't know him personally, I just think he's just inadvertently crossed that fine line between a cool looking car and how to get away with it on the road. Can't blame the police at all but it is interesting that they were arrested whilst parked aired out at a service area - I wonder if they'd not have been spotted / seized if they'd left them parked at a higher ride height - or maybe they had just been observed on CCTV on the roads prior to the seizure?
